Vanessa Williams Temporarily Steps Away from The Devil Wears Prada Following Mother’s Passing
London—The stage production of The Devil Wears Prada has announced a temporary schedule change after Vanessa Williams, who stars as the formidable Miranda Priestly, shared the news of a personal loss. Williams recently took to social media to honor her late mother, Helen, who passed away in London in late December.
Describing her mother as “a powerhouse, dynamo, and force of nature packed into a 5ft frame,” Williams’ heartfelt tribute resonated with fans and colleagues alike. The beloved Ugly Betty star is currently leading the highly successful stage adaptation of the iconic film, which has shattered box office records at the Dominion Theatre and extended its run well into 2025.
In a statement issued on social media, the production confirmed Williams would take a brief leave of absence to grieve and spend time with her family. During her absence from January 8 to January 15, Debbie Kurup will step into the role of Miranda Priestly. The production assured audiences that Williams is set to return on January 16.
The official statement read: “Due to a sudden loss in her family, Vanessa Williams will not be appearing from Wednesday 8 to Wednesday 15 January. During this time, the role of Miranda Priestly will be played by Debbie Kurup. Vanessa will return to The Devil Wears Prada from Thursday 16 January.”
The theater community and fans of Williams have expressed their condolences and support. Kurup, a seasoned performer, is expected to bring her own flair to the iconic role during Williams’ absence.
