Vanessa Williams Redefines Miranda Priestly on the West End Stage

Vanessa Williams is turning heads in her West End debut as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada The Musical, delivering a performance that boldly sidesteps comparisons to Meryl Streep’s iconic portrayal in the 2006 film. The celebrated actress and singer, known for her dynamic career that spans television, film, and Broadway, is taking ownership of the character and reshaping audience expectations.

Williams, whose career launched after becoming the first Black Miss America and later included acclaimed roles in series like Ugly Betty and a Tony-nominated performance in Into the Woods, is unafraid to defy comparisons. When asked about stepping into a role previously defined by cinematic legend Meryl Streep, she made it clear that her aim is to create an entirely new journey for Miranda Priestly. According to Williams, the magic of theatre lies in the actor’s ability to reinvent a character in ways that resonate uniquely with the live audience—something she is determined to achieve with her own distinctive flair.

One of the most challenging moments of the show for Williams comes during a pivotal monologue—a scene that has already captured the imagination of theatre-goers and online communities alike. Known among fans as the “cerulean” moment, this high-pressure scene requires her to deliver a series of speeches with impeccable timing. While the audience’s familiarity with the monologue initially presented a distraction, Williams has learned to use the collective response as fuel for her performance, ensuring that the scene remains a powerful testament to her command of the stage.

In a candid reflection on her previous role as Wilhelmina Slater on Ugly Betty, Williams notes that while both characters share a commanding presence in the world of fashion, the creative freedom afforded by Miranda Priestly is entirely different. Wilhelmina, as conceived by Williams, evolved into a more rounded and humorous figure over the course of the series. In contrast, Miranda on stage is tasked with driving the narrative with a sense of stern elegance and gravitas that is at once intimidating and enthralling.

Williams isn’t the only one making waves with her new role. Co-star Georgie Buckland, making her West End debut as Andy Sachs, shared her own blend of excitement and nerves—recalling how she grew up with a crush on the film’s original Anne Hathaway. Buckland’s debut performance adds an intriguing dynamic to the production, while offstage moments have already generated buzz. From playful exchanges with Elton John—whom Buckland described as a personal idol—to serendipitous run-ins with film festival luminaries like Stanley Tucci, the show’s energy extends well beyond the stage.

With The Devil Wears Prada The Musical playing at the Dominion Theatre until January 2026, Williams and her cast are poised to make a lasting impression on the London theatre scene. Looking ahead, Williams hinted at future projects that excite her, mentioning a keen interest in joining a production reminiscent of The White Lotus. In doing so, she underscores her commitment to continuous reinvention and her eagerness to explore new creative territories.

As the production garners the attention of celebrities and critics alike—with notable fans such as Nick Jonas, Donatella Versace, and Anna Wintour in attendance—Vanessa Williams is proving that true artistry lies in the ability to transcend comparisons and create a performance that is entirely one’s own. In redefining Miranda Priestly, Williams is not only challenging the legacy of a cinematic icon but also setting a bold new standard for what can be achieved on the stage.
