Todrick Hall Set to Star in UK Production of ‘Burlesque the Musical’ Before West End Debut
In an exciting announcement for fans of musical theater, Todrick Hall, the multi-talented singer, choreographer, and YouTube sensation, is slated to join the UK cast of ‘Burlesque the Musical.’ This stage adaptation of the 2010 hit movie, which featured stars Christina Aguilera and Cher, will see Hall taking on the role of Sean in its pre-West End run.
The production is scheduled to grace the stage at the Manchester Opera House from June 13 to June 29, before moving to the Glasgow Theatre Royal from September 11 to September 28. It will then return to Manchester for an engagement from October 3 through November 2. While dates for its transfer to London’s West End remain under wraps, anticipation is already high.
‘Burlesque the Musical’ has been penned by Steven Antin, with direction and choreography by Nick Winston. Kate Wetherhead contributes additional material. The musical features an impressive lineup of songs by Christina Aguilera, Sia, and Diane Warren, alongside new compositions by Hall and Jess Folley, who stars as Ali Rose, the character originally played by Aguilera in the film. The narrative centers around Ali as she ventures to New York to find her mother, only to be captivated by the vibrant and transformative world of underground burlesque.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Hall stated, ‘I am beyond excited to be returning to my first love, musical theater, in such a special way: my first original role and my theatrical composing debut.’ He highlighted the joy of bringing his own music to life on stage and sharing both the limelight and writing credits with Jess Folley. ‘I’m blessed, honored, flattered and ready to dust off the old heels and let the kids have it eight shows a week!’ Hall remarked.
Furthermore, Hall expressed his admiration for the original ‘Burlesque’ film and his excitement about collaborating with Steven Antin and Christina Aguilera, who are reuniting for this musical venture, with Aguilera also serving as a producer.
Hall is no stranger to Broadway, having appeared in productions such as ‘Kinky Boots,’ ‘Waitress,’ ‘Chicago,’ ‘Memphis,’ and ‘The Color Purple.’ Additionally, he is known for his participation in the ninth season of ‘American Idol,’ his role as a choreographer for ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race,’ and his MTV reality TV series.
The UK production of ‘Burlesque’ will also feature Michael Mather as Jackson, Olivier Award winner George Maguire as Vince, and an ensemble cast including Billie-Kay, B Terry, Jess Qualter, Yasmin Harrison, Lily Wang, Hollie-Ann Lowe, and Ope Sowande, among others. This ensemble promises to bring the captivating and life-changing world of burlesque to audiences across the UK, setting the stage for what is poised to be a thrilling West End run.
