It looks like The Phantom of the Opera might be making a return to New York City! The iconic Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, which wrapped up its epic 35-year Broadway run in 2023, could be heading Off-Broadway soon.
An industry publication, Theatrical Index, has a listing suggesting that Phantom could start performances on March 15, 2025. The details are pretty vague, though. There’s no word on which theatre it’ll be at or who’s part of the creative team, apart from the writers. Evan Bernardin Productions is mentioned as the general manager, and Kate Lumpkin Casting is handling the casting, but that’s about all we know. The companies involved are keeping quiet for now.
The idea of Phantom coming back isn’t all that surprising. What’s intriguing is the talk of it being Off-Broadway. There’s a buzz about a completely new and immersive version of the show, kind of like Sleep No More. This could be why it’s not returning to the big Broadway stage just yet. But again, nothing official has been announced.
For those who might not know, The Phantom of the Opera features music by Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Charles Hart (with some additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe), and a book by Stilgoe and Lloyd Webber. It’s based on Gaston Leroux’s novel about a young soprano who becomes the obsession of a masked man living beneath the Paris Opéra House. The show opened in London’s West End in 1986, hit Broadway in 1988, and quickly became a worldwide sensation. Even now, a streamlined version is still running in London, along with several international tours.
Original producer Cameron Mackintosh has hinted several times that he wants to bring Phantom back to Broadway, mentioning this even during the final performance. But so far, there’s been no official update.
The closing of Phantom, followed by Bad Cinderella in June 2023, ended a 44-year streak of Lloyd Webber musicals on Broadway. But the composer seems eager to change that. Some of his other hits are making a comeback with fresh takes: Cats: The Jellicle Ball is playing Off-Broadway, a minimalist Sunset Boulevard is coming to Broadway soon, and new versions of Starlight Express and Evita are also in the pipeline.
So, while we wait for more concrete news, the idea of The Phantom of the Opera haunting New York again is definitely exciting!
