The Lord of the Rings Musical to Open in New Zealand
The Watermill Theatre’s Award-Winning Production Heads Across the Sea
The highly acclaimed production of ‘The Lord of the Rings — A Musical Tale’ is set to premiere in New Zealand this November.
Directed by Paul Hart, the musical first debuted at the Watermill Theatre in England during the summer of 2023, earning a WhatsOnStage Award for Best Regional Production. The musical, inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s iconic novels, features a book and lyrics by Shaun McKenna and Matthew Warchus, with music composed by A.R. Rahman, Värttinä, and Christopher Nightingale.
This adaptation initially premiered at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto in 2006, followed by a successful run at the Drury Lane Theatre in London’s West End in 2007.
The New Zealand premiere will take place at the Civic in Auckland, with performances running for a limited season from November 5, 2024. Ticket sales are expected to commence soon.
In addition to its New Zealand run, an American production of the musical is scheduled from July 19 to September 1. This timing coincides with the 70th anniversary of the publication of ‘The Fellowship of the Ring,’ the first book in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which was released on July 29, 1954.
Excitement is building for the upcoming New Zealand premiere, with many looking forward to experiencing the Hobbits’ epic re-telling when ‘The Lord of the Rings – A Musical Tale’ arrives in Auckland this November.
