LOS ANGELES - SEP 9: Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber at the 2018 Creative Arts Emmy Awards - Day 2 - Press Room at the Microsoft Theater on September 9, 2018 in Los Angeles, CA
Few composers define musical theatre quite like Andrew Lloyd Webber, whose sprawling, dramatic scores have filled theatres and hearts for decades. However, despite his revered status, the maestro faced a surprisingly barren stretch at Broadway’s Tony Awards, one that finally ended this year—exactly three decades after the original SUNSET BOULEVARD stormed Broadway in 1995.
At the 2025 Tony Awards, held on Sunday night, SUNSET BOULEVARD clinched the coveted title of Best Musical Revival, marking Lloyd Webber’s first major Tony Award since the very same show earned Best Musical thirty years earlier. For Lloyd Webber, a figure synonymous with iconic musicals like The Phantom of the Opera and Cats, this victory represented more than just a trophy—it symbolised a return to form, and a poignant full-circle moment in an already legendary career.
Since the dazzling success of the original SUNSET BOULEVARD, Lloyd Webber’s Broadway fortunes had dwindled, with a string of near-misses and outright snubs. High-profile productions such as Jesus Christ Superstar (2000, 2012), Evita(2012), and School of Rock (2016) all fell short despite significant fanfare. Even more notably, shows like By Jeeves, The Woman in White, and the controversial Bad Cinderella were either sparsely recognised or completely overlooked in their respective Tony seasons.
But 2025 signalled a dramatic reversal of fortune. This year’s acclaimed revival of SUNSET BOULEVARD, starring the charismatic pop sensation-turned-theatre powerhouse Nicole Scherzinger, captivated both audiences and critics. The production breathed new, darker life into the famed story of faded star Norma Desmond, simultaneously reintroducing Lloyd Webber’s distinctive melodies to a fresh generation of theatre-goers.
Scherzinger, making her dazzling Broadway debut as Norma Desmond, earned rave reviews for her powerful, sinister portrayal winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical, alongside SUNSET BOULEVARD‘s broader success. Additionally, the show’s rich atmosphere was further honoured when lighting designer Jack Knowles picked up the Tony Award for Best Lighting Design of a Musical, underscoring the revival’s atmospheric brilliance.
Webber himself led an emotional procession to the stage to accept the Best Musical Revival award. The moment was charged with nostalgia and relief, marking the end of a curious drought that had stretched across multiple ambitious productions.
This significant Tony victory not only marked the welcome return of Lloyd Webber’s artistic dominance but also underscored the enduring power and timeless appeal of his musical storytelling. In defeating an impressive field including revered revivals such as Gypsy, Floyd Collins, and Pirates! The Penzance Musical, SUNSET BOULEVARD emphatically proved its relevance and resonance, reminding the world of Webber’s unparalleled contribution to modern musical theatre.
In an industry often marked by fleeting success, Lloyd Webber’s 30-year Tony journey, ending precisely where it began, feels perfectly theatrical. It’s an emphatic reaffirmation of his legacy, reminding us all that even the brightest lights occasionally dim but true legends always find their way back to centre stage.
