Studiocanal is expanding its creative footprint with the launch of a new theatre-focused division, unveiled as Paddington: The Musical begins its highly anticipated West End run. The new label, Studiocanal on Stage, will develop live productions drawn from the studio’s extensive global catalogue.
The initiative is led by Ron Halpern, EVP Global Productions, and marks a significant strategic move for the French studio. With more than 9,400 titles from 60 countries and a century of filmmaking history under its banner, Studiocanal intends to tap its archive for theatrical adaptations with strong commercial potential. While specific upcoming projects have not been disclosed, the company signalled an ambition to build a sustained pipeline of stage content.
The timing of the announcement aligns with the arrival of Paddington: The Musical, now in previews at the Savoy Theatre and already one of the hottest tickets in London. Following the success of the film trilogy, the stage production has garnered intense public attention, including a recent viral moment when Prince William and Kate Middleton met the beloved bear at the Royal Variety Performance. The show is currently on sale through May 2026.
Studiocanal’s growing theatre portfolio also includes a newly extended run of The Producers at the Garrick Theatre, now booking until September next year. Additional productions in circulation include a Scottish tour of Restless Natives, the Sheffield Crucible staging of Summer Holiday and A Boy Called Christmas at Chichester Festival Youth Theatre.
Anna Marsh, CEO of Studiocanal, highlighted the new label as a key part of the company’s wider cross-format expansion plan. She noted that the creation of Studiocanal on Stage complements existing arms such as Studiocanal Stories, which focuses on literary adaptations, and Sixth Dimension, which develops horror properties. Together, these divisions form a multi-pronged approach to leveraging the studio’s intellectual property for screen, stage and beyond.
As Paddington: The Musical settles in for a major West End run, Studiocanal’s leap into theatre signals a commitment to transforming more of its film heritage into live experiences for audiences worldwide.
