Stephen Sondheim’s Historic Connecticut Home Sells for $3.25 Million

The Roxbury, Connecticut home of the late Stephen Sondheim, renowned composer and lyricist, has been sold for the first time in nearly four decades. Sondheim, who passed away in 2021, had owned the home since 1980 and used it as a retreat from New York City. The property was listed last November and recently sold for its asking price of $3.25 million, as reported by Curbed and the New York Post.

The estate spans nine acres and includes a 3,700-square-foot main house, a one-bedroom pool house, and a detached garage. The main residence, constructed in 1792, features three bedrooms and retains many original architectural details such as a forest green portico and wood shingle siding.

Inside, the home showcases wide-plank hardwood floors, a pastel-colored entry hall, and dual sidelight windows. The living room features a cathedral ceiling with exposed beams, parquet flooring, an old stone fireplace, and stained glass windows. Additionally, there is a formal dining room with subtle striped wallpaper and two more fireplaces located throughout the residence. Other notable areas include a wood-paneled office, a music room filled with natural light, and a spacious sunroom with stone flooring and wainscoting.

This sale follows the November transaction of Sondheim’s Manhattan townhouse in Turtle Bay Gardens, which also sold for its full asking price of $7 million.
