The iconic composer of the beloved musical ‘Wicked,’ Stephen Schwartz, will soon make an on-screen appearance in the highly anticipated film adaptation of the show. Fans of Schwartz, known for his groundbreaking work on ‘Pippin’ and ‘Godspell,’ will be excited to see him step into the world of Oz in a special cameo role.
This exciting detail was recently confirmed by People Magazine, which included an exclusive still from the film showing Schwartz in character. According to the publication’s special edition dedicated to the film, ‘His is one of the film’s many cameos, which are too delightfully surprising to spoil here.’ Schwartz will appear as the Emerald City guard who utters the memorable line, ‘The wizard will see them now,’ to Elphaba (played by Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (played by Ariana Grande) during the ‘One Short Day’ sequence.
The film, directed by Jon M. Chu, boasts an impressive cast including Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Tony nominee Ethan Slater as Boq, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz, and Peter Dinklage as Dr. Dillamond.
‘Wicked’ is based on Gregory Maguire’s novel ‘Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West,’ which reimagines the story of two university friends in Oz who take divergent paths, ultimately becoming Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West. The movie adaptation will be released in two parts, with the first installment set to debut on 22 November 2024, and the second part scheduled for 21 November 2025, after a recent shift in the release date.
The news of Schwartz’s cameo has already sparked joy among fans eager to spot familiar faces in the cinematic reimagining of the beloved musical. As audiences prepare to revisit Oz, the composer’s on-screen presence adds a special touch to the much-anticipated adaptation.
