Star-Studded Cast Announced for UK Premiere of Sondheim’s Final Musical Here We Are

The National Theatre has unveiled further casting details for Here We Are, the final musical by legendary composer Stephen Sondheim, with a book by David Ives. The production, which enjoyed its world premiere in New York last year to critical acclaim, will make its UK debut at the Lyttelton Theatre from 23 April to 28 June 2025, as part of artistic director Rufus Norris’ final season.

Already confirmed in the cast are Tracie Bennett (Tartuffe) and Tony Award winner Denis O’Hare, who will reprise their roles from the New York premiere. Joining them are celebrated UK actor Rory Kinnear, along with a stellar ensemble that includes Emmy winners Jane Krakowski (30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family). The expanded cast also features Richard Fleeshman, Harry Hadden-Paton, Martha Plimpton, Paulo Szot, Chumisa Dornford-May, and Cameron Johnson, promising a powerhouse of talent for this eagerly awaited production.

Directed by Tony Award winner Joe Mantello, Here We Are draws inspiration from two classic Luis Buñuel films, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and The Exterminating Angel. The story follows a group of guests trapped in a surreal dinner party they cannot leave, blending sharp satire with Sondheim’s signature wit and musical genius.

The creative team for the production is equally impressive. Renowned set and costume designer David Zinn will bring the visually surreal world to life, while choreography by Sam Pinkleton and lighting design by Natasha Katz promise a dynamic and immersive stage experience. Sound design is by Tom Gibbons, with orchestrations by longtime Sondheim collaborator Jonathan Tunick and additional arrangements by Alexander Gemignani. Musical direction and supervision will be helmed by Nigel Lilley.

Here We Are premiered at The Shed in New York in 2023, earning rave reviews for its intricate score and thought-provoking narrative, a fitting conclusion to Sondheim’s extraordinary career. Critics hailed it as “ingenious,” “profoundly theatrical,” and “a masterwork in its own right.”

Tickets for the National Theatre run will go on sale to the general public on 16 October, with priority booking available earlier for members. This production is expected to be one of the most talked-about theatrical events of the year, offering audiences a final chance to experience new work from one of the greatest figures in musical theatre history.

With an unparalleled cast and creative team, Here We Are is set to be a landmark moment for both the National Theatre and fans of Stephen Sondheim’s enduring legacy.
