NEW YORK CITY - JUNE 2013: Times Square crowds and traffic at night. The site is regarded as the world's most visited tourist attraction with nearly 40 million visitors annually.
Alright, buckle up, Broadway enthusiasts! We’re smack dab in the middle of the 2023-2024 Broadway season, and let me tell you, the lineup for this spring is nothing short of spectacular. With 12 musicals on the docket (nine fresh out of the oven and three revivals), the big question is: which of these gems will be the next Tony contender? Let’s dive into a casual yet informed sneak peek at each show, including a bit on their plots, the award creds of their creative teams, and those all-important opening and closing dates.
First up, ‘Days of Wine and Roses’ hit the stage on January 28 and plans to wrap up by April 28. It’s a heart-tugging adaptation of JP Miller’s ’58 teleplay and Blake Edwards’s ’62 film, portraying a couple’s love and struggle in 1950s New York. The team bringing this to life? None other than Craig Lucas with a Tony-nominated book, Adam Guettel’s Tony-winning score, starring Broadway faves Brian d’Arcy James and Kelli O’Hara, and directed by Michael Grief.
Then, we’ve got ‘The Notebook’ starting previews on February 10, with a grand opening on March 14. Yes, it’s that Nicholas Sparks story, with Allie and Noah battling the odds for love. The crew includes Bekah Brunstetter and Ingrid Michaelson spinning the narrative and tunes, with a cast that reads like a who’s who of Broadway talent, under the direction of Michael Grief and Schele Williams.
‘Water for Elephants’ swings into previews on February 24 and officially opens March 21. Picture this: a young man, a train, and a circus. This adaptation of Sara Gruen’s novel promises a magical ride with Rick Elice’s book, music by PigPen Theatre Co., and a star-studded cast including Grant Gustin and Isabelle McCalla, all under Jessica Stone’s direction.
March 8 marks the return of ‘The Who’s Tommy,’ a rockin’ revival of the ’93 hit based on The Who’s ’69 album. Expect some script tweaks and a powerhouse cast, including Ali Louis Bourzgui and Alison Luff, led by the original production’s Tony-winning director, Des McAnuff.
‘The Outsiders,’ previewing March 16 and opening April 11, brings S.E. Hinton’s classic to life with a musical twist. The team? Adam Rapp, Justin Levine, Jamestown Revival, and a cast that’ll knock your socks off, directed by Danya Taymor.
‘Lempicka,’ starting previews on March 19 and opening April 14, tells Tamara de Lempicka’s riveting story with a book and score by Carson Kreitzer and Matt Gould. The cast features Eden Espinosa and is directed by Tony winner Rachel Chavkin.
‘Suffs,’ kicking off March 26 and opening April 18, shines a light on the women’s suffrage movement with Shaina Taub pulling double duty. This one’s got history, heart, and a cast that includes Jenn Colella and Nikki M. James, directed by Leigh Silverman.
‘Hell’s Kitchen’ begins previews on March 28 and opens April 20. Loosely inspired by Alicia Keys’ early life, this musical features her songs, a book by Kristoffer Diaz, and a cast including Shoshana Bean and Brandon Victor Dixon, with Michael Grief at the helm.
‘The Wiz,’ previewing March 29 and opening April 17, brings us a vibrant revival of the ’75 classic with new material by Amber Ruffin and a star-studded cast including Wayne Brady, directed by Schele Williams.
‘The Heart of Rock and Roll,’ also starting March 29 and opening April 22, jams out to Huey Lewis and the News hits, with a book by Jonathan A. Abrams and a lineup including Corey Cott.
‘The Great Gatsby,’ previewing March 29 and opening April 25, offers a jazz-age spectacle with a book by Kait Kerrigan and a score by Jason Howland and Nathan Tysen. Jeremy Jordan and Eva Noblezada lead the cast, directed by Marc Bruni.
Lastly, ‘Cabaret,’ previewing April 1 and opening April 21, returns for its fourth Broadway revival. Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin lead a dazzling cast in this West End transfer, directed by Olivier winner Rebecca Frecknall.
So, there you have it—this spring’s Broadway lineup is packed with promise, talent, and potentially a few Tony darlings. Which one’s got you booking tickets already?
