The release of the highly anticipated West Side Story film has been delayed almost a year.
The film was set to be released on director Steven Spielberg’s birthday, December 18th, 2020, but is now being pushed to a December 20th, 2021 release.
Set on New York’s Upper West Side in the 1950s, West Side Story tells the story of two rival street gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. Tony, a member of the Jets, and Maria, from the Sharks, fall in love, and — in a homage to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet — face the fallout of being in an interracial relationship in a time when racism and prejudice against immigrants ran rampant.
The film features Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler as fated loves Tony and Maria, as well as Broadway favourites Ariana DeBose as Anita, David Alvarez as Bernardo, and Brian d’Arcy James as Officer Krupke.
