Shakespeare’s Globe Unveils Spectacular 2025 Summer Season

The magic of Shakespeare returns in full force as Shakespeare’s Globe has announced its 2025 summer season, promising an exciting blend of classic tragedies, comedies, and modern masterpieces. Running from April to October, this season is set to dazzle audiences with a rich selection of plays, visionary directors, and a few unexpected surprises. Whether you’re a die-hard Shakespeare fan or just looking for an unforgettable night at the theatre, this season is not one to miss.

A Season of Classics and Contemporary Gems

Sean Holmes, associate artistic director, takes the reins on two major productions: ROMEO AND JULIET and THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR. The tragic love story of ROMEO AND JULIET will open the season on 25 April, with a yet-to-be-revealed cast. Meanwhile, THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR, a riotous comedy, will run from 20 July to September with design by Grace Smart, text by Si Trinder, and voice by Gary Horner.

The season also sees a return to American theatre, with Ola Ince directing a new revival of Arthur Miller’s THE CRUCIBLE. Running from 8 May to 12 July, this powerful play explores the hysteria of the Salem witch trials and remains profoundly relevant today. Designed by Amelia Jane Hankin, the production will also feature contributions from Renell Shaw as composer and Annmette Verspeak for voice and text.

A Return and a Debut

After the success of PRINCESS ESSEX, director Robin Belfield returns to Shakespeare’s Globe with TWELFTH NIGHT, one of the Bard’s most beloved comedies. Running from 8 August to 25 October, it will feature design by Jean Chan, music by Simon Slater, and movement direction by Ingrid Mackinnon. Belfield described his return as “totally thrilling,” calling TWELFTH NIGHT a play that encapsulates the full spectrum of human emotion.

Adding to the excitement, Owen Horsley makes his directorial debut at the Globe with the lesser-staged TROILUS AND CRESSIDA, running from 26 September to 26 October. With design by Ryan Dawson-Laight, this play delves into love and betrayal set against the backdrop of the Trojan War.

One-Night-Only Magic and Theatrical Experimentation

For those who enjoy spontaneity in their theatre, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM: FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY will take place on 14 September. Directed by Blanche McIntyre, this unique performance will see a company of actors unite on the day to deliver a one-time-only rendition of Shakespeare’s enchanting comedy. This daring, seat-of-the-pants performance is sure to be a highlight of the season.

Meanwhile, the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse will see the return of ROUGH MAGIC, directed by Lucy Cuthbertson, from 19 July to 23 August. This experimental piece explores Shakespearean themes through an innovative lens, making it a must-see for adventurous theatre-goers.

Community and Global Initiatives

The Globe’s summer season isn’t just about performances; it’s about making theatre more accessible. Michelle Terry, artistic director, highlighted affordability as a key focus, revealing that last year, over half of their tickets were available for £30 or less, with nearly 75,000 audience members taking advantage of the iconic £5 Groundling ticket. The 2025 season aims to continue this commitment, ensuring that more people can experience world-class theatre.

In addition, Shakespeare’s Globe will engage in cultural and social collaborations, including a partnership with the World Health Organisation, marked by a special event on 4 June. The theatre will also host an Open Iftar event on 9 March in collaboration with Ramadan Tent Project, fostering a sense of inclusivity and community within its historic walls.

Why This Season Stands Out

One of the most striking aspects of this year’s line-up is the balance between well-known favourites and lesser-explored works. While ROMEO AND JULIET, TWELFTH NIGHT, and A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM will draw large audiences, productions like TROILUS AND CRESSIDA and ROUGH MAGIC offer something fresh. The return of THE CRUCIBLE also provides a modern counterpoint to Shakespeare, demonstrating the enduring relevance of classic storytelling.

Another key feature is the season’s experimental approach. From the unpredictable magic of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM: FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY to the fusion of Shakespeare with contemporary themes in ROUGH MAGIC, the Globe continues to push theatrical boundaries while staying true to its heritage.

With an impressive mix of comedies, tragedies, and contemporary classics, the 2025 summer season at Shakespeare’s Globe promises something for everyone. Whether you’re drawn to the passionate romance of ROMEO AND JULIET, the biting social commentary of THE CRUCIBLE, or the joyful chaos of TWELFTH NIGHT, this season will be packed with unforgettable performances.

And, in true Globe fashion, the experience extends beyond the stage. With affordable ticket options, community-driven events, and a global perspective, the theatre is more committed than ever to making world-class productions accessible to all.

So, book your tickets, stand as a Groundling, and immerse yourself in the wonder of live theatre. The 2025 summer season awaits!
