In a delightful twist of art imitating art, ‘Schmigadoon!’, the whimsical Apple TV+ series that captivated audiences with its tongue-in-cheek tribute to Golden Age musicals, is set to make its theatrical debut. The stage adaptation will premiere on January 31, 2025, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, promising fans a live rendition of the much-adored series, including a run through February 9.
Crafted by Cinco Paul, the co-creator of the original series, the musical will feature a blend of favorite tunes from the show, including the Emmy-winning hit “Corn Puddin’,” alongside fresh material designed to enchant the theater crowd. Christopher Gattelli will take the reins, directing and choreographing, ensuring that the show’s transition from screen to stage captures the original’s charm and vibrancy.
‘Schmigadoon!’ centers around New York doctors Josh and Melissa, whose attempt to salvage their faltering relationship through a backpacking trip leads them astray. Lost in the woods, they stumble upon Schmigadoon, a mystical town where life is a continuous Golden Age musical. The narrative weaves humor with heart, exploring themes of love and life through a melodious lens.
The television series featured a dazzling array of talent, including Keegan-Michael Key, Cecily Strong, Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Dove Cameron, Aaron Tveit, among others, spanning two celebrated seasons. As ‘Schmigadoon!’ prepares for its stage debut, it remains to be seen which stars might reprise their roles or join anew to bring this enchanted musical town to life before a live audience.
