Paul Mescal Reportedly Set to Star in Broadway’s A Streetcar Named Desire

Paul Mescal

Various news outlets are abuzz with reports that Paul Mescal, the acclaimed actor from the West End, is poised to bring his lauded portrayal of Stanley Kowalski to Broadway in A Streetcar Named Desire. While there has been no official announcement as of yet, the possibility has been tantalizing theatre enthusiasts and industry insiders alike.

Rumors have been swirling for some time regarding a transfer of the production to New York, but these were further fueled by a recent article from Deadline. In a surprising twist, the article, while focused on unrelated news about Ridley Scott’s new film The Dog Stars, casually mentioned that Mescal would begin work on the movie “next spring, after Mescal stars on Broadway in A Streetcar Named Desire.” This snippet has been interpreted as an indirect confirmation of the production’s arrival on Broadway.

The production, which received high praise during its London run, showcases Mescal’s powerful turn as the intense and troubled Stanley Kowalski, a role immortalized by Marlon Brando in the original 1947 Broadway debut and subsequent 1951 film. The news comes as a pleasant surprise for those who had initially believed the show might make its U.S. appearance at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM).

While the production’s official details, including its casting, theater, and performance dates, remain under wraps, speculation is rife that it could open before April to qualify for the upcoming Tony Awards season. If so, it sets the stage for a remarkable Broadway season, pitting Mescal against his Gladiator II co-star Denzel Washington, who is set to star in Othello. The potential competition could create a dramatic showdown in the Best Actor category, sparking even more excitement among theatergoers.

For now, fans will have to wait for further confirmation. But if the rumors hold true, Mescal’s reprisal of Stanley Kowalski is certain to be one of the most anticipated events of the Broadway season.
