Nicole Scherzinger made a spectacular Broadway debut by clinching the prestigious Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her electrifying performance as Norma Desmond in the revival of Sunset Boulevard. The award, presented at the 2025 Tony Awards on Sunday evening, marked Scherzinger’s entry into Broadway’s elite circle, overcoming fierce competition from Broadway veterans including Megan Hilty, Audra McDonald, Jasmine Amy Rogers, and Jennifer Simard.
Accepting the award, an emotional Scherzinger expressed gratitude and pride in her diverse heritage, remarking, “I always felt like I didn’t belong, but you all have made me feel like I belong and I have come home at last.” Her victory was particularly notable given the intense scrutiny this category had attracted, especially with the highly anticipated face-off between Scherzinger and six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald, who was acclaimed for her role as Momma Rose in the revival of Gypsy.
Scherzinger’s bold, dark interpretation of Norma Desmond has significantly differentiated her from the legendary performances by predecessors Glenn Close and Patti LuPone. Meanwhile, McDonald, who made history as the first Black actor to portray Momma Rose on Broadway, also brought a fresh and distinct interpretation to her iconic role.
The lead-up to the ceremony was further charged by recent controversies stirred by a profile of LuPone published in The New Yorker. The feature reignited discussion over Broadway’s longstanding rivalries and racial dynamics within theater circles, casting additional spotlight and significance on this year’s Tony race.
Scherzinger’s award signifies a powerful acknowledgment of her compelling theatrical talent, solidifying her place among Broadway’s top stars.
