Neil Meron is set to produce a film adaptation of Jason Robert Brown’s 13 The Musical for Netflix!
Neil has produced musicals such as Hairspray and Chicago, as well as Jesus Christ Superstar Live, Hairspray Live, The Wiz Live, and The Sound of Music. The adaptation will be directed by Tamra Davis, and Robert Horn will adapt his co-written book (with Dan Elish) from the stage production. It’s also reported that Jason Robert Brown will be writing new music for the film.
13 follows the story of Evan Goldman, who struggles with his parents’ divorce, moving towns, and the idea of adulthood all ahead of his Bar Mitzvah.
The only ever Broadway musical to ever have a cast and band entirely made of teenagers, 13 premiered on Broadway in 2008 and closed after just 105 performances. The OBC boasted an impressive cast of teens who have gone on to successful careers, including Ariana Grande, Elizabeth Gillies, Graham Phillips, and Eric Nelsen.
A favourite of schools and community theatres, it’s great to see Netflix breathing new life into such a great piece of musical theatre.
Production is set to commence in August.
