Lin-Manuel Miranda Sets the Record Straight on Rumored Cameo in ‘Wicked’

In a recent interview, musical theatre icon Lin-Manuel Miranda addressed swirling rumors regarding a cameo appearance in the upcoming film adaptation of the beloved musical Wicked. The Hamilton creator, known for his groundbreaking contributions to musical theatre, declared that the tale of his near-involvement in the film has been “blown way out of proportion.”

During a chat with US talk show host Stephen Colbert, Miranda recalled his enthusiasm about the project shortly after Wicked director Jon M. Chu signed on to helm the film. “As soon as Jon got the gig, I was like, ‘well, if there’s a part for me…’” Miranda shared. He added a humorous personal touch, recounting his fondness for a particular line in Wicked: “My favourite line in the show is in the opening number when this one Munchkin runs out and goes, ‘is it true you were her friend?’ Man, I don’t know if you’ve seen a live production of Wicked, but sometimes they really put some sauce on the ball when they deliver that line. So I was like, ‘I really want to do that line, Jon’.” Despite his clear enthusiasm and the creative spark behind his idea, Miranda was ultimately not cast in the role.

Director Jon M. Chu, who previously collaborated with Miranda on the 2021 film adaptation of In The Heights, had mentioned in the audio commentary for the Oscar-nominated film that the star had been considered for a small part in Wicked. Chu explained that although Miranda’s involvement was initially on the table, it was later decided against. “It would have been too distracting,” Chu noted, emphasizing that the decision was made in the best interest of the film. He also praised the performance of the young actress who ultimately took on the role, describing her portrayal as excellent.

The discussion, which included a playful exchange with Stephen Colbert—who quipped that they would continue to “blow the matter out of proportion”—underscores the light-hearted nature of the entire episode. Miranda’s candid remarks have effectively put to rest the notion that he was “turned down” in a dramatic fashion. Instead, it appears that creative and practical considerations dictated the casting decision.

While Miranda’s potential cameo in Wicked never came to fruition, the film itself promises to be full of surprises. The movie already boasts a roster of special appearances from key figures associated with the original musical, including appearances by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, the voices behind the iconic roles of Elphaba and Glinda.

Fans of both Hamilton and Wicked can look forward to more magic on screen with the announcement of a sequel, aptly titled Wicked For Good—a nod to the show’s memorable closing number—set to hit theaters later this year.

As the excitement around Wicked builds, Miranda’s remarks serve as a reminder of the many behind-the-scenes decisions that shape the films audiences come to love. Though his cameo did not materialize, Lin-Manuel Miranda remains an influential and beloved figure in the world of musical theatre, continually inspiring fans with his creativity and passion.
