LOS ANGELES - NOV 29: Lin-Manuel Miranda at the "Mary Poppins Returns" Premiere at the El Capitan Theatre on November 29, 2018 in Los Angeles, CA
Warriors, come out to play!
Lin-Manuel Miranda has revealed exciting news: the musical Warriors, created in collaboration with Eisa Davis, is poised to transition from a hit concept album to a full-fledged stage production. The announcement came during an interview with The New York Times, where Miranda discussed his growing slate of creative projects.
Currently promoting the music for Disney’s Mufasa, now captivating audiences worldwide, Miranda took a moment to reflect on the success of Warriors—a concept album inspired by the cult-classic 1979 film The Warriors and Sol Yurick’s novel of the same name. Describing the album as an “immersive listening experience,” Warriors tells the story of a New York City gang’s treacherous journey from Coney Island to the Bronx and back after being framed for the murder of a prominent gang leader.
Miranda hinted at what’s to come, saying, “I think at the top of the year, Eisa and I will just start having conversations about how to adapt [Warriors] to the stage.” While no specific dates, venues, or timelines have been announced, the prospect of seeing the narrative unfold live has generated significant buzz.
Part of the motivation for bringing Warriors to the stage, Miranda explained, is the increasingly “visual culture” of modern audiences. The musical promises to blend the gritty energy of the original film with the creative storytelling flair that Miranda and Davis are known for.
Fans of the original 1979 Paramount Pictures film and the novel can expect the stage adaptation to capture the raw intensity and urban drama of the story. Whether it will retain its immersive musical experience or expand into a more traditional theatrical format remains to be seen, but excitement is already building for this latest venture from one of Broadway’s most innovative creators.
