The celebrated musical BARNUM has embarked on a major new UK and Ireland tour for 2026, and audiences are already responding with excitement to the production’s return to the road. This latest staging of the classic spectacle stars acclaimed West End and television performer Lee Mead in the title role of Phineas Taylor Barnum, the visionary circus impresario whose life has inspired generations of theatre-goers.
This new touring production is presented by Bill Kenwright Ltd, a company with a long history of bringing large-scale musicals and beloved classics to audiences throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland. The tour opened earlier this month at the Theatre Royal in Windsor, marking the beginning of a season that will run well into the autumn. Lee Mead, known widely for his West End credits including JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT, WICKED and LEGALLY BLONDE, leads the company through a series of dates across the UK before handing over the role later in the year.
The show itself is a vibrant celebration of spectacle, blending musical theatre with circus arts, acrobatics, and a large ensemble of multi-talented performers. Directed by Jonathan O’Boyle, whose recent work includes productions such as PICTURE YOU DEAD and THE LAST FIVE YEARS, and choreographed by Oti Mabuse, famed for her time on STRICTLY COME DANCING, BARNUM promises audiences a theatrical experience that is as visually dazzling as it is musically rich.
At the heart of the production is the figure of P.T. Barnum, a 19th-century showman whose name became synonymous with imagination and entertainment. The musical traces his journey from a small-town dreamer to a creator of one of the most famous shows on Earth. With his wife Charity by his side, Barnum pursues his ambitions with unflagging energy and vision, building a world filled with wonder that captivates audiences both within the story and in the theatre seats.
The musical’s score, composed by Cy Coleman with lyrics by Michael Stewart and a book by Mark Bramble, includes memorable numbers that have become fan favourites over the decades. Songs such as Join the Circus, Colours of My Life, Come Follow the Band and Love Makes Such Fools of Us All provide both narrative propulsion and emotional depth, and they are brought to life by the cast’s remarkable musicality. In this production, more than 20 actor–musicians perform on over 150 instruments, underscoring the show’s ethos of artistry, collaboration and sheer theatrical joy.
Alongside the musical ensemble, the production boasts a thrilling array of circus elements and international acts. Acrobats, contortionists, aerial artists and other circus performers help to create a layered experience that feels immersive and dynamic. These elements are integrated seamlessly with the story, illustrating Barnum’s lifelong fascination with showmanship and his relentless pursuit of the extraordinary.
Lee Mead’s casting as Barnum has drawn particular interest. Mead first came to prominence after winning the BBC reality series Any Dream Will Do, which led to his breakout role as Joseph in JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT. Since then he has built a varied career across stage and screen, including television appearances in series like Casualty and Holby City. His performance in Barnum is notable not just for his vocal and acting talents but for his physical presence in the role, which includes mastering the high wire, an element that harks back to the musical’s early West End productions.
Supporting Mead is a strong ensemble cast. Monique Young takes on the role of Charity Barnum, Barnum’s supportive partner who helps anchor his dreams with heart and grounding presence. Penny Ashmore plays the famed opera singer Jenny Lind, while Dominique Planter portrays the entertainer Joice Heth and Fergus Rattigan appears as General Tom Thumb, a celebrated performer of the era. Together they form a vibrant group of characters who enrich the story and bring depth to its exploration of fame, ambition and spectacle.
The creative team behind BARNUM also includes a host of seasoned theatre professionals. George Dyer serves as arranger, orchestrator and musical supervisor, Lee Newby has designed sets and costumes, and Matt Nicholson is credited as co-choreographer alongside Oti Mabuse. Lighting, sound, circus direction and puppetry are all handled by experts in their respective fields, creating a unified artistic vision. Circus consultants from Zippos Circus and the National Centre for Circus Arts add authenticity to the production’s physical performance elements.
After its initial run with Mead at the helm, the production will shift later dates to feature acclaimed actor Matt Rawle, who previously received praise for his performance in the role during the autumn 2024 run at the Watermill Theatre. Rawle’s addition ensures that Barnum continues to draw audiences and maintain its high artistic standards throughout the tour.
The tour’s schedule is extensive, with stops planned in major cities across the UK and Ireland. Following the opening in Windsor, the company travels to venues including the York Grand Opera House, Brighton Theatre Royal, Portsmouth Kings Theatre, Cardiff’s Wales Millennium Centre, the Birmingham Hippodrome and many more before approaching the summer and autumn legs. In later months, the tour will include performances in cities such as Newcastle, Torquay, Leicester, Liverpool, Edinburgh and Belfast, highlighting the broad reach and ambition of this production.
In its combination of thrilling spectacle, heartfelt story and live musical talent, the BARNUM tour stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of classic musical theatre. For fans of theatre and circus alike, it offers a rare opportunity to see a show that embraces creativity at every turn and celebrates the power of performance to captivate and inspire.
