In a move already sparking awards chatter, Lincoln Center Theater has confirmed that its acclaimed City Center Encores! staging of RAGTIME will transfer to Broadway’s Vivian Beaumont Theatre for a 14-week limited engagement this autumn. Previews start 26 September ahead of an official opening on 16 October, with the production set to close on 4 January 2026.
Three of the Encores! principals return for the Broadway run: three-time Tony nominee Joshua Henry reprises the role of Coalhouse Walker Jr.; Caissie Levy steps back into the part of Mother; and recent Tony winner Brandon Uranowitzagain portrays Tateh. Their performances were singled out by critics earlier this year, with particular raves for Henry’s emotionally charged vocals—praise that has already positioned him as an early front-runner for the 2026 Tony Awards.
Director Lear deBessonet once again helms the production—this time as the newly appointed artistic director of Lincoln Center Theater. Programming RAGTIME as her inaugural season opener underscores her commitment to large-scale, socially resonant musicals that speak to contemporary America through historical narratives.
The revival retains the show’s celebrated creative DNA: a book by Terrence McNally and the sweeping score by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, all adapted from E.L. Doctorow’s 1975 novel. Originally premiering on Broadway in 1998, RAGTIME won four Tony Awards and has since become a touchstone for musical theatre that interrogates race, immigration, and class at the turn of the 20th century.
Encores! mounted the musical with full orchestrations and a large ensemble—signals Lincoln Center Theater is expected to match, if not top, on the Beaumont’s expansive stage. With its signature blend of lush music and interwoven narratives, the production aims to offer both grand spectacle and intimate storytelling, reinforcing the show’s relevance to a modern audience.
Tickets will go on sale to the general public later this month. Performances run Tuesday through Sunday, with matinees on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Given the limited 14-week window—and the growing buzz around Henry’s performance—industry watchers expect brisk advance sales.
While the 2025–26 Broadway season is only just taking shape, insiders already view RAGTIME as a major contender—particularly in the acting and revival categories. Should the critical reception mirror the Encores! run, Joshua Henry’s long-awaited Tony could finally become reality.
More information and booking details will be available on Lincoln Center Theater’s website in the coming weeks.
