Fresh off the monumental success of Wicked, director Jon M. Chu shows no signs of slowing down. With Wicked: Part Two – For Good slated for a November 2025 release, Chu is already deep into development on several new musical projects, promising to further cement his status as one of Hollywood’s premier directors of the genre.

A Technicolor Revival

Chu has confirmed he is working on an adaptation of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, the beloved stage musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. A childhood favorite of the director, the project is being developed in collaboration with both musical legends. While the script is still in progress, Chu expressed his excitement for the opportunity to bring this vibrant biblical story to the screen.

The musical, which first premiered on Broadway in 1982, tells the story of Joseph from the Book of Genesis, blending dynamic music with a timeless tale of perseverance and faith.

A Seussian Adventure

In addition to Joseph, Chu is also directing an animated adaptation of Dr. Seuss’s Oh, the Places You’ll Go! Partnering with songwriting duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (The Greatest Showman, La La Land), Chu is crafting a musical experience inspired by the classic children’s book. This Warner Bros. project marks a collaboration with J.J. Abrams as producer and Jill Culton as co-director. Fans of Dr. Seuss can expect a visually stunning and musically rich adventure when the project is complete.

A History of Musical Success

Chu’s love for musicals has been evident throughout his career, beginning with his work on Step Up 2: The Streets and In the Heights. While In the Heights received widespread critical acclaim, its theatrical performance fell short of financial expectations. Nevertheless, the film’s success with audiences and critics alike reinforced Chu’s ability to translate the energy of stage musicals into cinematic experiences.

Wicked proved to be a turning point for Chu, with its first installment earning over $585 million worldwide and receiving glowing reviews from critics and audiences. The film’s success has reignited interest in cinematic musicals and set a high bar for Chu’s future projects.

A Britney Spears Biopic

Beyond musicals, Chu has been tapped to direct the highly anticipated Britney Spears biopic, following the success of her memoir The Woman in Me. Produced by Marc Platt, who collaborated with Chu on Wicked, the film will delve into the life of the iconic pop star. While casting for the project remains unconfirmed, speculation is already swirling, with names like Emma Roberts and Ariana Grande generating buzz.

Looking Ahead

As Wicked continues to dominate theaters, Jon M. Chu’s upcoming slate highlights his dedication to redefining the musical genre on screen. From reviving beloved stage classics to creating innovative new works, Chu is set to continue thrilling audiences with his bold and imaginative storytelling. With a mix of nostalgia, creativity, and boundary-pushing ambition, his projects are shaping the future of musicals in Hollywood.
