‘Heathers the Musical’ Confirms Full Off-Broadway Line-Up Ahead of Summer Launch

Fans of darkly comic high-school satire can start practising their “croquet swings”: Heathers the Musical has finalised casting and creative details for its New York engagement at New World Stages, Stage I. Previews begin on 22 June 2025, with an official opening slated for July.

A Fresh Pairing at the Top

Leading the company are Lorna Courtney—fresh from her Tony-nominated turn in & Juliet—as angst-ridden heroine Veronica Sawyer, and rising star Casey Likes (Warriors) as the brooding JD. They’re joined by a new trio of Heathers:

  • McKenzie Kurtz (Frozen, Wicked) as power-wielding Heather Chandler

  • Olivia Hardy as scheming Heather Duke

  • Elizabeth Teeter (Beetlejuice) as conflicted Heather McNamara

Familiar Faces and New Discoveries

Original Broadway favourite Kerry Butler returns to the show—this time doubling as Ms Fleming and Veronica’s mum—while Erin Morton takes on best-friend Martha Dunnstock. The football squad is headed by Xavier McKinnon (Ram Sweeney) and Cade Ostermeyer (Kurt Kelly), both discovered in an open casting call that attracted hopefuls from across the US.

Further support comes from Ben Davis, Cameron Loyal, and an ensemble featuring Sara Al-Bazali, Emma Benson, James Caleb Grice, Louis Griffin, Devin Lewis, Kiara Michelle Lee, Brian Martin, Lav Raman, Syd Sider, and Cecilia Trippiedi.

Creative Team Revamp

Director Andy Fickman—who has guided multiple UK iterations—heads a refreshed creative roster:

  • Gary Lloyd (choreography) with additional moves by Stephanie Klemons

  • David Shields (set & costume design)

  • Ben Cracknell (lighting)

  • Dan Samson (sound)

  • Will Joy (music supervision) and Mona Seyed-Bolorforosh (music direction)

Intimacy coordination is by Rebecca Reaney, with fight direction from Lisa Connell. Stage management is led by Bess Marie Glorioso.

From Cult Film to Global Stage

Based on the 1989 Winona Ryder/Christian Slater cult classic, the musical by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe has carved a devoted following on both sides of the Atlantic. Following multiple London stints—including lengthy runs at The Other Palace and two West End turns—plus three UK tours, the show now trains its sardonic wit on a New York audience determined to relive (or perhaps rewrite) their teenage years.

Tickets for the limited engagement are expected to go on general sale later this month. With “Big Fun” promised and an enthusiastic fan base already humming along, Heathers looks set to add another riotous chapter to its ever-expanding yearbook.
