Fran Drescher confirms development of ‘The Nanny’ into a Broadway musical

Fran Drescher, the creator and star of one of the 90’s most loved sitcom’s has announced the development of ‘The Nanny‘ into a musical bound for Broadway.

The Nanny was an American television series which originally aired on CBS from November 3 1993 to June 23 1999. Fran Drescher starred as Fran Fine, a Jewish fashion queen from Flushing New York who arrives on the door step of a British theatre producer in Manhattan and winds up becoming the nanny to his three children.

The series was originally created and produced by Drescher and her husband Peter Marc Jacobson, taking much of its inspiration from Drescher’s personal life growing up in Queens. The show earned an Emmy Award and Fran Drescher was nominated for two Golden Globe awards.

Though more and more films are being adapted to the stage, TV series rarely get the same treatment. The Nanny would join a slim list that includes SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical and The Adams Family.

The musical will feature a book penned by series creators Fran Drescher and Peter Marc Jacobson, with music by Crazy Ex-Girlfriend‘s Rachel Bloom and Adam Schlesinger and lyrics by Bloom. Marc Bruni (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical) will direct. The songwriting team behind the musical comedy “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” will write the score.

Drescher will write the book with Peter Marc Jacobson, who created and wrote the show with Drescher, who was his wife at the time. The cast has not been decided yet, the show said, but Drescher will not be reprising her role.

Scott and Brian Zeilinger, the father-son producing duo whose shows include Dear Evan Hansen and Mean Girls are also signed on. Marc Bruni Beautiful: The Carole King Musical will direct.
