‘Fawlty Towers’ Hits the Stage with John Cleese at the Helm

Fans of the beloved ’70s sitcom ‘Fawlty Towers’ are in for a theatrical treat this month at London’s West End. The iconic hotel chaos of Basil, Sybil, Polly, and Manuel is being brought back to life at the Apollo Theatre. Adapted by John Cleese, the original Basil Fawlty, the stage version condenses the sitcom into his favorite episodes—The Germans, Communication Problems, and The Hotel Inspector.

Despite the unchanged, classic narrative, Cleese encourages the new cast to explore the characters with a fresh spontaneity, blending scripted excellence with improvisational flair. The cast includes Adam Jackson-Smith as Basil Fawlty, Anna-Jane Casey as Sybil, Hemi Yeroham as Manuel, Victoria Fox as Polly, and Paul Nicholas as The Major. Each actor brings their own interpretation to these well-loved roles, striving to honor the original while presenting a genuine portrayal.

Cleese has emphasized the importance of comedic timing, especially in front of a live audience, expecting the performances to evolve significantly through the series of previews starting tonight. The official opening night is scheduled for May 15th.

The play will run from May 4th to September 28th, 2024, at the Apollo Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue. Theatre-goers can easily access the venue via Piccadilly Circus or Leicester Square Tube stations. With expectations high, this iteration of ‘Fawlty Towers’ promises to rekindle the timeless humor of the series for new and nostalgic audiences alike.
