Elton John has spoken out about why his recent musical ‘Tammy Faye’ failed to resonate with Broadway audiences, attributing its lacklustre performance to its political content. In a recent interview, John expressed that the musical, which opened on Broadway on November 14 but closed shortly after on December 8, was “too political” for American theatregoers.
Tammy Faye, focusing on televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker, explores the integration of church and state and critiques Ronald Reagan’s role in reshaping American politics. John believes this pointed commentary made the production unpopular, particularly because it premiered amidst heightened political tension surrounding the U.S. election.
Contrasting the disappointing Broadway experience, John highlighted the success of another musical he recently produced, ‘The Devil Wears Prada,’ which has been well-received in London’s West End.
Addressing speculation about retirement, John clarified that although his touring days are over—his ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ tour concluded in July 2023—he is not retiring from music entirely. John expressed a lack of desire to perform traditional concerts again, describing touring as increasingly stressful and citing a recent eye infection that significantly impaired his vision.
The music legend’s newest album, ‘Who Believes in Angels?,’ a collaboration with singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile, was released recently and marks John’s ongoing involvement in music despite stepping away from live touring.
