Fans of Wicked can rejoice as Amazon Prime UK has confirmed the digital release date for the first part of the highly anticipated screen adaptation. The musical sensation, directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, will be available to stream on Amazon Prime starting 3 January 2025 at 12:00 am GMT.
The film, based on Gregory Maguire’s bestselling novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, tells the untold story of two university friends in Oz: one destined to become Glinda the Good and the other, the infamous Wicked Witch of the West. The adaptation features a screenplay collaboration between the musical’s original creators, Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz, alongside Dana Fox.
Released in cinemas on 22 November 2024, Wicked broke box office records during its opening weekend and garnered critical acclaim. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande received Golden Globe nominations for their performances as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, while the film itself was nominated for Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) and achieved recognition for its box office success.
