Christina Aguilera’s ‘Burlesque’ Musical Heads to the West End

Christina Aguilera’s stage adaptation of the 2010 film Burlesque is set to make its West End debut this summer at London’s Savoy Theatre. The limited-run production, which will play from July 11 to September 6, marks a new chapter for the film that, while modest in its original box office success, continues to resonate with fans.

Aguilera, who starred in the film as a determined dancer striving for stardom at a struggling LA burlesque lounge, has reconnected with Burlesque by teaming up with the movie’s writer and director Steve Antin and fellow renowned singer Sia. The trio has reworked the film’s original songs for the stage and added new compositions penned by US singer Toderick Hall and Brit Jess Folley, both of whom contributed to tryouts in Manchester and Glasgow last year.

“I’m proud that Burlesque the Musical is coming to London’s West End! Our journey of making this film to bringing this show to the stage has been so special and exciting. Following our successful previews, having the show land in the West End later this year is a dream come true!” Aguilera said, echoing the excitement that has built around the production.

The musical, which replaces Mean Girls at the Savoy Theatre for its limited season, is penned and produced by Steven Antin with additional material by Kate Wetherhead. While details about the London cast are still under wraps, industry insiders speculate that some performers from the earlier tryouts may reprise their roles given the project’s promising reception.

Notably, although Nick Winston was the director/choreographer for the previous run, current publicity materials for the West End production do not mention his involvement, leaving room for speculation about creative changes as the show transitions to London.

With Burlesque the Musical playing a limited season only, producers hint at the possibility of a transfer or return at a later date, should the production continue to capture the public’s imagination. For now, fans of Aguilera and Sia alike have a summer treat to look forward to in one of London’s most iconic theatres.
