PARIS – A unique opportunity awaits theatre enthusiasts in Paris this winter with the unveiling of a newly adapted French-language version of ‘Les Misérables.’ This exciting production, featuring a fresh French translation, is set to take the stage at Théâtre du Châtelet from November 22 to December 31, 2024. The venue has announced that the libretto has been reworked for the occasion by Alain Boublil.
Audiences can look forward to hearing beloved original tunes in French, such as ‘J’avais rêvé’ (‘I Dreamed a Dream’), ‘À la volonté du peuple’ (‘Do You Hear the People Sing?’), ‘Mon histoire’ (‘On My Own’), and ‘Le Grand jour’ (‘One Day More’).
The iconic musical, based on Victor Hugo’s monumental novel, has been a staple in the West End for nearly 40 years. Originally staged in French in France in 1980, ‘Les Misérables’ transitioned to London in 1985 in English after extensive workshopping led by producer Cameron Mackintosh.
Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France amidst major revolt and civil unrest, the story follows escaped convict Jean Valjean and his relentless pursuer, Inspector Javert.
The Paris cast features an impressive lineup of talent. Benoît Rameau, a four-time winner of the Gordes Melodies Competition, will portray Jean Valjean. Sébastien Duchange, known for his role in ‘The Jungle Book’ in Paris, will play Javert, and Claire Perot, famous for her performance as Sally Bowles in ‘Cabaret’ directed by Sam Mendes, will take on the role of Fantine.
David Alexis, another ‘Cabaret’ alum, will play Monsieur Thénardier, with Christine Bonnard of ‘Mamma Mia!’ fame as Madame Thénardier. Juliette Artigala, a Mountview graduate known for ‘We’ll Have Nun Of It,’ will portray Cosette, and ‘The Voice’ star and Air France airline pilot Jacques Preiss will play Marius.
Océane Demontis, who starred in ‘The Lion King’ and voiced Asha in the French version of Disney’s ‘Wish,’ will play Éponine, while Stanley Kassa, another ‘Lion King’ star, will be Enjolras. Maxime de Toledo, known for ‘Showboat’ and ‘Camelot’ on the New York stage, will portray the Bishop of Digne.
The new production will feature musical direction by Alexandra Cravero, direction by Ladislas Chollat, set design by Emmanuelle Roy, costumes by Jean-Daniel Vuillermoz, and lighting by Alban Sauvé.
Performances will be subtitled in both French and English. Attendees are advised to check with the venue regarding subtitle availability for specific dates.
Meanwhile, the original West End production of ‘Les Misérables’ continues its run, with an international arena tour set to launch later this year.
