Broadway’s Tammy Faye to Close in December After Short Run

The new musical Tammy Faye will bid farewell to Broadway next month, closing at the Palace Theatre on December 8. The production, which officially opened last week, will conclude its run after 24 previews and 29 performances. The musical stars Katie Brayben as Tammy Faye Bakker, Christian Borle as Jim Bakker, and Michael Cerveris as Jerry Falwell. The cast also features Autumn Hurlbert as Tammy Faye’s alternate, with a talented ensemble that includes Nick Bailey, Charl Brown, and Mark Evans, among others. The story explores the life of the televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker, chronicling her rise to fame, personal struggles, and lasting cultural impact.

Tammy Faye boasts an impressive creative pedigree. The musical features a score by the iconic Elton John and Jake Shears, with a book by James Graham. Directed by Rupert Goold and choreographed by Lynne Page, the production received acclaim for its dynamic staging and bold storytelling.

The show’s creative team also includes Tom Deering and Mark Dickman for orchestrations, Bunny Christie for set design, Katrina Lindsay for costumes, Neil Austin for lighting, Nick Lidster for sound, and Finn Ross for video. Together, they brought Tammy Faye’s colourful world to life, reflecting both her flamboyant personality and the cultural zeitgeist she helped shape.

Despite its high-profile cast and creative team, Tammy Faye struggled to find its footing on Broadway. The production received mixed reviews upon opening and faced challenges in maintaining steady ticket sales. Its closure after less than two months highlights the competitive nature of Broadway, where even ambitious productions can struggle to sustain a run.

While its Broadway run may be short-lived, Tammy Faye leaves an impression as a bold musical retelling of a complicated and fascinating life. With its star power and striking creative elements, the production will remain a memorable addition to the 2024 Broadway season. Fans of the musical and Tammy Faye Bakker’s story are encouraged to catch the show before its final curtain on December 8.
