The highly anticipated Broadway revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Blvd., directed by Jamie Lloyd and starring Nicole Scherzinger, officially opened on October 20 at the St. James Theatre. Following its Olivier Award-winning run in London’s West End, the minimalist production has now made its mark on Broadway, with critics weighing in on the show’s return.
The revival, which earned seven Olivier Awards, including Best Musical Revival and Best Director for Lloyd, features the same leading cast that captivated London audiences. Nicole Scherzinger reprises her Olivier-winning role as Norma Desmond, the faded Hollywood star, alongside Tom Francis, who also received an Olivier for his portrayal of screenwriter Joe Gillis. Grace Hodgett-Young returns as Betty Schaefer, the aspiring writer, and David Thaxton as Max Von Mayerling, Desmond’s devoted butler.
Critics have praised Lloyd’s stripped-down approach to the iconic musical, focusing on its emotional core and bringing fresh nuance to the story of faded fame and unfulfilled dreams. Scherzinger’s portrayal of Desmond has been particularly noted for its intensity and vulnerability, solidifying her as a standout in the production.
Sunset Blvd. continues its run at the St. James Theatre, bringing a fresh take on a Broadway classic that has already proven its success across the Atlantic.
