In a Broadway season brimming with buzzworthy productions, the musical adaptation of Death Becomes Her stands out as a spellbinding, laugh-filled triumph. Playing at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, this clever reimagining of the 1992 cult classic film has theatergoers buzzing, delivering biting wit, dazzling performances, and jaw-dropping stagecraft.

The show’s creative team—composer/lyricists Julia Mattison and Noel Carey, and book-writer Marco Pennette—have struck theatrical gold by embracing the campy essence of the original movie while elevating it to a new level of absurd hilarity. The result? A show as outrageously fun as it is innovative, seamlessly blending influences from Wicked and What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? with a dash of Mel Brooks-style zaniness.

At the heart of the story are two frenemies-turned-immortal rivals: Madeline Ashton, a vain and fading actress played with dazzling comedic timing by Megan Hilty, and Helen Sharp, portrayed by the show-stealing Jennifer Simard. The plot kicks off with Madeline’s theft of Helen’s fiancé, Ernest Menville (Christopher Sieber), a cosmetic surgeon caught between his tumultuous love interests. Things take a surreal turn when the women discover a mysterious potion promising eternal youth, offered by the enigmatic and glamorous Viola Van Horn.

Star Power in Full Force

Megan Hilty, known for her powerhouse vocals and sharp comedic chops, shines as Madeline. With dynamic music and hilariously biting lines, Hilty commands the stage in a performance that would be the centerpiece of any other production—if not for Simard’s incredible turn as Helen. A two-time Tony nominee, Simard is nothing short of revelatory, transitioning effortlessly from dowdy to dazzling while delivering some of the most memorable laughs and songs of the evening.

Christopher Sieber is equally delightful as the beleaguered Ernest, while Josh Lamon brings hysterical energy to the role of Stefan,

Michelle Williams at the World premiere of ‘The Lion King’ held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, USA on July 9, 2019.

Madeline’s quirky housekeeper, delivering a standout number in Act Two. The role of Viola Van Horn, played by Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child fame, is the epitome of seduction and mystery. Williams’ sultry performance, paired with glamorous costumes and a commanding presence, makes her a magnetic force onstage.

Stage Magic at Its Finest

What truly sets Death Becomes Her apart is its seamless blend of storytelling and stagecraft. From Tim Clothier’s dazzling recreations of the film’s special effects—yes, Madeline’s infamous tumble down the stairs is recreated with jaw-dropping ingenuity—to Derek McLane’s gothic scenic design and Paul Tazwell’s opulent costumes, every detail dazzles. The production’s choreography, under the expert guidance of director Christopher Gattelli, adds yet another layer of brilliance to this already remarkable show.

A Must-See Musical Experience

In a Broadway landscape littered with uninspired film-to-stage adaptations, Death Becomes Her is a breath of fresh air. It is not only an uproarious comedy but also a testament to the possibilities of theater when bold creativity meets impeccable execution. Whether you’re a fan of the original film or new to its macabre humor, this production is an unmissable celebration of wit, glamour, and sheer theatrical joy.

With sharp writing, a captivating score, and a dream cast delivering career-defining performances, Death Becomes Her is, quite literally, to die for. Get your tickets now—this is the Broadway experience everyone will be talking (and laughing) about for years to come.
