Audra McDonald to Lead Broadway Revival of Gypsy, Reopening Majestic Theatre
New York, NY – Broadway is set to welcome a new revival of the classic musical Gypsy, with the iconic role of Madame Rose to be played by the renowned Audra McDonald. This highly anticipated production will mark the reopening of the Majestic Theatre, previously home to The Phantom of the Opera.
Directed by George C. Wolfe and choreographed by Camille A. Brown, Gypsy will begin previews on 21 November, with the official opening night scheduled for 19 December.
Gypsy, featuring a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, is loosely based on the life of striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee and explores her complex relationship with her overbearing stage mother. The musical originally debuted on Broadway in 1959, starring Ethel Merman as Rose.
This production reunites McDonald and Wolfe, who previously collaborated on the Broadway musical Shuffle Along, Or The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed, which ran in 2016. Wolfe is also set to receive a 2024 Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement later this year.
The revival of Gypsy promises to be a landmark event in the Broadway calendar, bringing together some of the most celebrated talents in theatre today.
