LOS ANGELES - SEP 9: Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber at the 2018 Creative Arts Emmy Awards - Day 2 - Press Room at the Microsoft Theater on September 9, 2018 in Los Angeles, CA
In an exciting announcement for musical theatre enthusiasts, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s next project is set to be The Illusionist, a magical fusion of music and illusion that promises to captivate audiences. Directed by Jamie Lloyd, known for his acclaimed work on Sunset Boulevard and Evita, this production is shaping up to be a must-see event.
The musical, which features a score composed by Lloyd Webber himself, is co-created with Chris Terrio, the Oscar-winning writer behind Argo and Justice League. Drawing inspiration from the 2006 film of the same name, The Illusionistis set in the enchanting backdrop of 1900 Vienna, following a rebellious magician who challenges the status quo of the imperial city.
Described by Deadline as possessing an ‘operatic’ quality, the score is expected to blend Lloyd Webber’s signature style with innovative musical elements. Additionally, British songwriter Bruno Major is collaborating on the project, further enriching its creative landscape. Audiences can also anticipate mesmerizing magic elements integrated into the show, enhancing the theatrical experience.
The production is co-produced with Michael Harrison, who has a proven track record with critically acclaimed shows like Sunset Boulevard and Starlight Express. With eyes set on a London premiere, the possibility of a New York opening has not been ruled out, indicating the show’s broad appeal and ambitious scope. The anticipated debut is slated for 2026.
In a related development, Lloyd Webber recently announced that Jamie Lloyd will direct ‘a version’ of Evita for a 2025 run. Lloyd previously helmed a successful iteration of the musical at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in 2019, which garnered a five-star review from WhatsOnStage and won the WhatsOnStage Award for Best Direction. While it remains unconfirmed whether the upcoming production will mirror the previous version or offer a fresh take, expectations are high.
This announcement follows a string of exciting projects from Lloyd Webber, including an immersive adaptation of Phantom of the Opera. His revival of Starlight Express has also recently been extended for a fourth time, running well into October 2025. This surge of activity suggests that theatre lovers may have the chance to enjoy at least three Lloyd Webber productions concurrently in London next year.
In addition to these upcoming shows, the Really Useful Group has launched a new initiative called the ‘Box Five Club,’ designed for dedicated theatre fans seeking exclusive access to Lloyd Webber productions and behind-the-scenes insights.
As anticipation builds for The Illusionist, audiences can look forward to a magical theatrical experience that promises to combine Lloyd Webber’s iconic musicality with the enchanting world of illusion.
