In an illustrious announcement fit for the theatre connoisseurs of the British realm, the 2023 revival cast recording of the esteemed “Sweeney Todd” is poised for a grand digital unveiling on the 8th of September. This long-anticipated musical tome is set to be launched under the illustrious banners of Warner Music Group’s Arts Music and the venerable Reprise Records.
Guiding this album to its sonic splendour are none other than the revival’s musical maestro, Alex Lacamoire, partnered in this noble endeavour with co-producer Thomas Kail, the visionary director behind this production.
This Tony Award-nominated rendition echoes the unparalleled score of Stephen Sondheim, reminiscent of its inaugural Broadway display, enriched by Jonathan Tunick’s original orchestration encompassing a commendable 26-player ensemble — a musical treat that shall grace the album. The narrative backbone of “Sweeney Todd” has been crafted by the masterful quill of Hugh Wheeler.
Heading this revival’s ensemble is the formidable Josh Groban, embodying the titular role, joined by the enchanting Annaleigh Ashford as Mrs. Lovett and the captivating Ruthie Ann Miles in the guise of the Beggar Woman. These sterling actors have been graced with Tony nominations in 2023 for their thespian prowess. Supplementing the cast for this recording are the talents of Jordan Fisher as Anthony, Gaten Matarazzo as Tobias, Maria Bilbao as Johanna, Jamie Jackson as the stern Judge Turpin, John Rapson as Beadle Bamford, and Nicholas Christopher taking on the role of Pirelli.
Further enriching the ensemble are Galyana Castillo, Jonathan Christopher, Dwayne Cooper, Kyrie Courter, Taeler Cyrus, Timothy Hughes, Paul-Jordan Jansen, Alicia Kaori, Michael Kuhn, Raymond J. Lee, Patricia Phillips, Mia Pinero, Samantha Pollino, Lexi Rabadi, Nathan Salstone, Kristie Dale Sanders, Stephen Tewksbury, Daniel Torres, Felix Torrez-Ponce, DeLaney Westfall, and Hennessy Winkler.
This revival, which had whetted the public’s appetite with previews from the 26th of February, magnificently raised its curtains on the 26th of March, gracing the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre.
