American singer-songwriter Adam Lambert performs at his concert in Shanghai, China, 5 January 2016.
The Hollywood Bowl will rock this summer when Grammy-nominated pop star Adam Lambert steps into the role of Judas for a fresh, three-night staging of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Jesus Christ Superstar. He joins previously announced Tony and Emmy winner Cynthia Erivo, who will take on a gender-bending portrayal of Jesus from 1–3 August.
Lambert’s casting follows his acclaimed Broadway debut last year as the Emcee in Cabaret. Erivo, whose breakout turn as Elphaba in Wicked catapulted her to global fame, adds another high-profile musical theatre credit with this production.
The Bowl’s limited run will be helmed by Tony-winning director-choreographer Sergio Trujillo (Ain’t Too Proud, Jersey Boys) and conducted by Tony and Grammy winner Stephen Oremus (The Book of Mormon, Kinky Boots). Additional casting, including the pivotal role of Mary Magdalene, will be announced in the coming weeks.
In a statement, LA Phil president and CEO Kim Noltemy called the staging “a bold, fresh interpretation of a legendary musical, returning to its rock roots,” noting that the venue first hosted Superstar in 1971. The show continues the Bowl’s tradition of summer Broadway presentations, which in recent years have included Into the Woods, Kinky Boots and A Chorus Line.
Tickets for Jesus Christ Superstar—and all LA Phil summer concerts—go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. PT on Tuesday, 6 May, via the Hollywood Bowl website and box office.
