New York, 25 June 2025 — Producers have confirmed that CHESS, the Cold-War thriller by ABBA legends Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus and lyricist Tim Rice, will make its long-awaited Broadway comeback this autumn. Previews begin 15 October at the Imperial Theatre, with an official opening set for 16 November.
Tony-winner Aaron Tveit (Moulin Rouge!), Emmy-nominee Lea Michele (Funny Girl) and rising star Nicholas Christopher (Sweeney Todd) headline the first full Broadway revival of the cult musical. Tveit tackles brash American grandmaster Freddie Trumper, Michele returns as conflicted second Florence Vassey, and Christopher portrays Soviet champion Anatoly Sergievsky—a combustible triangle where romance, politics and espionage collide across the chessboard.
Book: Emmy-winner Danny Strong (Dopesick) pens a brand-new script, replacing Rice’s original libretto.
Direction: Tony-winner Michael Mayer reunites with Michele after their landmark Spring Awakening.
Choreography: Lorin Latarro (Waitress).
Music Supervision: Brian Usifer.
Producers: Tom Hulce, Robert Ahrens and The Shubert Organization, in association with Creative Partners Productions.
The Shubert-owned Imperial—the musical’s 1988 home—becomes its battleground once more, following rumours the venue would stage the revival once Smash vacated the house.

Conceived as a concept album in 1984, CHESS stormed London’s West End in 1986 before a brief but memorable Broadway run in 1988. Hits like “One Night in Bangkok” and “I Know Him So Well” helped cement its reputation, even as the original production’s intricate book drew mixed reviews.
Set against the World Chess Championship, the plot pits rival superpowers—and rival suitors—against each other at the height of the Cold War. For the competitors and the woman caught between them, every move risks personal and political collapse.
