It has been announced that the much loved musical ‘Matilda’, based on the original Roald Dahl story, is set to join other Broadway musicals by being streamed on Netflix. The movie musical will be released by Sony’s TriStar Pictures in the UK and Ireland and then subsequently distributed by Netflix globally in December 2022.
The story follows a young Matilda Wormwood who is neglected by her parents, Harry and Zinnia, and sibling Michael. The young genius goes on to find solace in the fictional worlds found in books.
The cast of the West End production includes Emma Thompson, Alisha Weir, Lashana Lynch, Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough.
Matilda is written by Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin. Based on the book of the same name by Roald Dahl, Matilda tells of a super-powered girl who uses her new skills to help those around her, all the while trying to deal with the atrocious Miss Trunchbull.
The movie musical adaptation will be directed by Matthew Warchus, who directed the original stage production.
