68th Drama Desk Awards: Celebrating Theater’s Best with a Twist on Tradition

Mark your calendars! The 68th Annual Drama Desk Awards are rolling out the red carpet on June 10th, celebrating the crème de la crème of Broadway, off-Broadway, and off-off-Broadway. We’ll get a sneak peek at the nominees on April 29th, with details about the venue and all the juicy extras to drop in the next few months. Heads up to the productions vying for the spotlight—you’ve got until April 25th to hit the stage and catch the eye of the judges.

Now, let’s talk about the awards themselves. Keeping up with the innovative changes from last year, the Drama Desk Awards are sticking to their gender-neutral performance categories. That means we’ll see nominees battling it out for titles like Outstanding Leading Performance in a Play or Musical, and Outstanding Featured Performance in a Play or Musical. And guess what? Each category has doubled up on nominees, giving voters the chance to crown not one, but two stars in each category.

For those who love a bit of history, the Drama Desk Awards, originally known as the Vernon Rice Awards back in 1955, have always been a big deal in the theater world. The powerhouses casting their votes are none other than the theater critics, journalists, editors, and publishers who live and breathe the stage. The nominating committee’s a pretty stellar lineup this year, featuring the likes of Martha Wade Steketee, Linda Armstrong, Daniel Dinero, and a few more notable names who know their theater inside out.

So, stay tuned, theater buffs! The Drama Desk Awards are about to bring some serious drama (the good kind) to the stage!
