In a theatrical climate where large scale productions reign supreme, intimate evenings of music and entertainment often fly under the radar.
Such an evening took place a few weeks ago in Sydney with musical theatre stars Bobby Fox (Jersey Boys) and Rob Mills (Wicked, Legally Blonde) singing alongside the Sydney Philharmonia Choir in an exciting evening of Beatles Music. However, we at AussieTheatre have heard so many people singing the praises of this semi-staged concert, we thought a special photo feature was in order.
With stunning vocal arrangements by Sally Whitwell and Daniel Walker, the event was produced without the bells and whistles of a major theatrical event, taking audiences members on a musical journey through the music of The Beatles.
“There is something so magical about performing with a choir, and the Sydney Philharmonia Choir are as good as it gets”, Rob Mills told AussieTheatre after the show.
“These guys and girls volunteer their time week to week to create some of the most beautiful choral arrangements i’ve ever heard. All thanks to the incredibly talented Sally Whitwell and Dan Walker”.
Both Mills and Fox have are self confessed life-long Beatles fans and both were honoured to perform some of the fab four’s well known and not-so-well-known pieces at City Recital Hall in Sydney.
“A highlight for me was the very smooth and swing version of Penny Lane and to listen to Bobby Fox and the choir perform ‘She’s Leaving Home’. Wow, I want a copy of that!” said Mills.
Fox added “The Sydney Philharmonia Choir led by Sally and Dan were so courageous with their arrangements allowing them and others to experience the Beatles in such an uplifting way.”
Fingers crossed the event will enjoy a revival sometime soon – according to the Sydney Philharmonia’s twitter account, audiences members were “dancing in the aisles” at the end of the show… doesn’t that sound like something we should encourage?

I saw this show after being offered a 2 for 1 deal - hadn't even realised it was on before that! It really was lovely - my favourite song was Bobby's version of "Norwegian Wood" complete with spot-on whistling!! A low-key evening with two of my favourite performers in a lovely venue.
