Last night, the 2011 Helpmann Awards were presented at the Opera Theatre, Sydney Opera House and the team from AussieTheatre.com were there to capture the magic.

The excitement of the Red Carpet event was palpable, as the opera house stairs were flooded with celebrities, nominees and presenters including Ida Buttrose, Barry and Miranda Otto, Caroline O’Connor, Geoffrey Rush, Lucy Durack, the Jersey Boys, Lucy Maunder, Toby Schmitz, Amanda Harrison and Sharon Millerchip.

AussieTheatre.com’s Liam & Damo were on site to interview any red carpet wanderer who would look their way (stay tuned for our Helpmann Award Video Feature later in the week), and we also managed to capture some great shots to share with you.

The three hour ceremony included performances from the casts of Hairspray (Good Morning Baltimore/You Can’t Stop The Beat), Mary Poppins (Step in Time), Rock of Ages (I Wanna Rock/Don’t Stop Believing) Love Never Dies, (Till I Hear You Sing) Dr. Zhivago (It Comes As No Surprise), Stomp, The Australian Opera Chorus, The 10 Tenors and Expressions Dance Company all of which were extremely well received and brilliantly executed.

A highlight of the evening was the medley of songs performed by quintessential showstoppers Sharon Millerchip, Caroline O’Connor and Amanda Harrison as a tribute to Australia’s original leading ladies Toni Lamond, Jill Perryman and Nancye Hayes – all three of whom were honoured with the JC Williamson Lifetime Achievement Award. To see two generations of musical theatre royalty onstage together was certainly a wonderful moment.
