Comedy Fest Chat: Hans

Adelaide loved Han’s cabaret Like A German but he’s a Melbourne Comedy Festival virgin. With a band called The Ungrateful Bastards, dancers called The Lucky Bitches, an endless supply of sequins and feather boas and rave reviews, he’ll have no problems feeling at home.

Hans

What MICF shows are you most looking forward to seeing?
I’m looking forward to seeing all the people I missed out on seeing during the Adelaide Fringe. And I’m also looking forward to seeing some of the shows I did see at Fringe that weren’t up to scratch and hoping they’ve got their act together by Melbourne.

What makes MICF different from all the other festivals?
It’s my first MICF so I’m not too sure what to expect, but I know Melbourne is known for having a very refined theatrical taste… No doubt they’re just going to eat me up, honey!

What’s an absolute must do for you when you visit Melbourne?
The biggest goal for me during my time in Melbourne will be to become a cast member of the Real Housewives. There is a lovely lady named Gina on the show who I think has stolen my look, so I’m looking forward to trading make up secrets with her. More is more!

What comedians/performers have influenced you the most?
I’m very much living in the world of reality but I do like a lot of the fictional characters out there… Like Jesus.

What’s advice do you wish you’d been given before your first gigs?
Don’t use Australis make-up!

Do you do still your own leafleting? Can you tell us something great or horrific that’s happened to you when leafleting?
I’ve been proposed marriage while flyering and I just had to say, “Geoffrey Edelsten, come back to me when you’re rich again”.

What’s the best (or worst) thing a review has said about you or your show?
Well, just last week I was called MIDDLE AGED in a review from Heckler. Thankfully they realised their error quickly and amended the copy. Of course, I’m still in my VERY early 20s.

Some of my favorite review quotes come from this very site:
“He’s kind of like the love child of Liberace and Priscilla (born in Germany and playing the piano accordion), mincing around the room in hot pants that would make even Kylie jealous”.
and
“It’s a show that is unpredictable, a little crazy and rockets along with a youthful vitality.”

Did you hear that Heckler… YOUTHFUL!

If you could invite anyone to see your show (and you know they would come), who would it be?
I would invite some of my favourite divas like Madonna, Kylie, Liza Minnelli and I would tell them to bring a pen and paper and take down some notes

What comedian (alive or dead) do you wish you’d seen live?
This is a tricky one because I have seen some very much alive comedians that I wished were dead.  But some of my favorite shows that I have seen and would love to see again are Joan Rivers, Barry Humphries and Bette Midler.

When did you realise that being funny is the career for you?
It’s not…

What’s the best heckle you’ve received?
I don’t get many hecklers, probably because I like to make my audience feel something that prevents them from speaking out of turn… terror.

Is there anything you’re not prepared to joke about?
Tony Abbott. He seems to be handling that one quite well himself.
