Katherine Ryan says West End role offer was withdrawn after vocal review

Katherine Ryan says an offer for a small role in an unnamed West End musical was withdrawn after her singing was reviewed by a person in America. In a first-person account published by The Sun on 25 August 2026, the comedian said the engagement ended before it began. She identified neither the production nor the part, saying only that the show had opened in May 2026 and was then running in the West End.

Ryan said she was initially offered the part subject to vocal approval. A person in America needed to hear her sing, and the answer after that review was no. Ryan described the outcome as a dismissal, but her account indicates that the approval condition had not been satisfied and that she did not start the engagement. It does not establish whether she had signed a contract or held anything more than a provisional offer.

The identity and authority of the reviewer also remain unclear. Ryan referred only to a person in America, leaving no verified basis to identify that individual as a producer or define their role in the casting process. The Sun’s surrounding narrative described the reviewer as an American producer, but the published words attributed to Ryan support only the more limited description. The stronger identification cannot be established from the available material. Nor does the account show whether the decision concerned her singing generally or her suitability for the unidentified part.

Ryan also addressed what the job would have demanded outside the casting process. She said the role involved eight performances a week while she had a baby at home, and that she later considered the schedule unmanageable. Her comments placed the lost opportunity alongside a recognition of the sustained workload required of professional theatre performers.

Important elements of the chronology remain unverified. Ryan did not give the date of the offer, vocal review or decision, beyond indicating that the engagement fell away before the show opened. She did not say whether she attended rehearsals, fittings or other production activity. The Sun placed the decision within weeks of opening, but the published words attributed to Ryan provide no exact interval. The available material therefore does not support a more precise timeline for the offer, approval process or withdrawal.

Ryan’s May opening clue makes BEETLEJUICE a plausible public match, but it does not identify the show. The musical began its West End season at the Prince Edward Theatre on 20 May 2026, which aligns with the limited description she supplied. Neither Ryan nor the production has confirmed any connection, and there is no verified evidence linking her to a character in BEETLEJUICE.

The production’s current official cast page, checked against information available on 26 August 2026, does not list Ryan. A full West End company announcement reported by Musical Theatre Review before the opening in April 2026 also omitted her. Those records establish only that Ryan received no public BEETLEJUICE credit. They do not prove that it was the production involved in the process she described. The cast snapshot is date-sensitive because the production had already undergone a scheduled principal cast change during its run.

Official production information lists BEETLEJUICE as a limited engagement through April 2027. Playbill reports that the West End staging reunites the Broadway creative team and that the original score is by Australian composer-lyricist Eddie Perfect. Perfect’s credit gives the story a direct Australian theatre connection, although it adds no evidence to the proposed identification of Ryan’s show.

The Sun’s headline characterised the specific part as Ryan’s ideal opportunity, but her published account did not make that claim. It establishes that she was excited and has a longstanding enthusiasm for musical theatre. Ryan described that interest as reaching back to childhood, when her participation was a hobby rather than professional stage work. Looking back on the withdrawn opportunity, she distinguished that early enthusiasm from the day-to-day demands carried by a working company.

The source material contains no confirmation or comment from Ryan’s representative or any relevant production. Any firmer identification now depends on one of those parties establishing the show, role and nature of the offer. Until then, BEETLEJUICE remains only a plausible inference.
