RENT reunion brings 13 original Broadway company members together in Kingston

Thirteen of the 15 members of RENT’s original Broadway company reunited on 15 August 2026 at The Festival in Kingston, New York, for a live 30th-anniversary set that paired songs from the musical with recollections of its creation and a remembrance of Jonathan Larson. At Hutton Brickyards rather than a Broadway theatre, the appearance brought most of the 1996 company back to the material amid a wider year of anniversary activity in New York and London.

According to People’s post-event report, the returning members were Adam Pascal, Anthony Rapp, Taye Diggs, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Fredi Walker-Browne, Wilson Jermaine Heredia, Byron Utley, Aiko Nakasone, Gilles Chiasson, Gwen Stewart, Kristen Lee Kelly, Rodney Hicks and Timothy Britten Parker. The 13-of-15 total covers the full original Broadway company, rather than only the performers in principal roles.

The final roster changed from the line-up announced in June. Playbill’s advance report included Jesse L. Martin and did not list Daphne Rubin-Vega. People’s post-event account reported that Rubin-Vega attended while Martin was absent. It attributed Martin’s absence to a scheduling conflict and said Idina Menzel, the other original company member missing from Kingston, was attending Disney’s D23 activities. Neither explanation has been independently confirmed by the performers or their representatives.

According to the same report, Rodney Hicks, one of the 13 returning members, covered material associated with Martin’s character, Tom Collins. Lauren Patten joined Fredi Walker-Browne for Take Me or Leave Me. Patten was an additional performer for the duet, not part of the 13-member original-company total.

People identified Rent, La Vie Bohème, Out Tonight, Take Me or Leave Me, I’ll Cover You, You’ll See, Another Day and Finale B among the selections, with Seasons of Love closing the set. The report did not present those songs as a complete set list. No official transcript or full performance recording was located, so the exact running order, duration and any additional selections remain unverified.

One reported detail underscored the set’s informal character. People said Taye Diggs used his phone as a lyric prompt during portions of the performance, with forgotten words becoming a light-hearted recurring feature of the reunion.

People also reported that the company discussed the process of creating RENT, remembered Larson and acknowledged the generations of theatregoers who have sustained a connection with the musical. The conversation covered both the work’s origins and the audience connection acknowledged by the returning company.

RENT began at New York Theatre Workshop in 1996 before transferring to Broadway. Larson died aged 35 on 25 January 1996, the night before the musical’s first scheduled Off-Broadway preview. RENT went on to win four Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Its original Broadway production ran for more than 12 years. The performers reunited in Kingston had belonged to the company at the beginning of that run.

The reunion was part of the inaugural edition of The Festival, an outdoor musical-theatre gathering staged from 14 to 16 August 2026 at Hutton Brickyards in New York’s Hudson Valley. The company appeared on the Broadway Direct Stage, but this was a festival engagement in Kingston rather than a performance in a Broadway theatre. It was a live set, not a full staging or revival of RENT. The reunion was one programmed appearance within the three-day gathering, not the festival in its entirety.

The 30th-anniversary billing describes the age of the musical, not a 30-year gap between appearances by members of its original company. Broadway.com’s archive documents original cast members returning for RENT’s tenth-anniversary performance in April 2006. Kingston was therefore a new anniversary gathering, but not the company’s first reunion since 1996. That earlier event rules out describing Kingston as the first reunion in 30 years.

The Kingston appearance also sits within a broader run of separate RENT activity. A 30th-anniversary West End staging is scheduled to begin performances at London’s Duke of York’s Theatre on 26 September 2026. AussieTheatre has covered that production. It is a separate London staging rather than a transfer of the Festival set, and its first performance falls between the August reunion and the October Broadway benefit.

For Australian audiences, the musical’s recent context includes a national tour and an earlier Sydney anniversary staging covered by AussieTheatre. Those local engagements are separate from the Hudson Valley reunion. No Australian broadcast, streaming or other distribution arrangement for the Kingston performance has been confirmed, so local stage history should not be confused with access to this event.

Another New York anniversary event remains ahead. A separate RENT 30th-anniversary benefit concert is scheduled for 26 October 2026 at Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre in support of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
