Broadway and Off-Broadway Set Closing Dates for Major Productions Through November

New York’s theatre calendar is preparing for a significant turnover, with five Broadway and Off-Broadway productions confirming final performance dates between August and November. The departures include a Tony Award-winning revival, a long-running jukebox blockbuster, a family entertainment institution and two cult musicals that successfully expanded beyond their original engagements.

The first final curtain will fall on Lincoln Center Theater’s acclaimed revival of RAGTIME, which concludes its extended engagement at the Vivian Beaumont Theater on Sunday, 16 August.

Directed by Lear deBessonet, the production emerged as one of the major winners of the 2026 Tony Awards. It received four awards, including Best Revival of a Musical, while Joshua Henry and Caissie Levy earned the leading musical performance prizes for their portrayals of Coalhouse Walker Jr and Mother.

RAGTIME shared the highest number of wins among musicals at this year’s ceremony, tying with THE LOST BOYS and SCHMIGADOON! on four awards each. Its final extension was announced shortly after the Tony Awards, adding two weeks to an engagement that had previously been scheduled to finish on 2 August.

Broadway will lose another major musical two weeks later when MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL plays its final performance at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on Sunday, 30 August.

The stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film began its Broadway run in 2019 and went on to receive 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Its visually extravagant production, contemporary pop score and revolving company of high-profile performers helped establish the show as one of Broadway’s most recognisable commercial attractions.

The musical had originally announced a closing date of 26 July, but strong demand secured a five-week extension. The final performances will bring the Broadway chapter to an end, although MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL continues to have a substantial international presence through touring and resident productions.

Off-Broadway will farewell one of its longest-running family productions when THE GAZILLION BUBBLE SHOW closes at New World Stages on Monday, 7 September.

Created by bubble artist Fan Yang, the production arrived in New York in 2007 for what was intended to be a nine-performance test engagement. Instead, it grew into a 19-year fixture featuring elaborate bubble sculptures, visual effects, music and appearances by several members of the Yang family.

By the time the final bubble bursts, the show is expected to have completed 6,802 performances and welcomed more than one million audience members. Its concluding months are being marked by a series of farewell activities under the banner “The Summer of Bubbles”, while plans are being developed for future national and international touring engagements.

TITANÍQUE will be the next Broadway production to depart, with its limited engagement at the St. James Theatre ending on Sunday, 20 September.

The musical comedy reimagines the story of Titanic through the songs and larger-than-life persona of Céline Dion. Created by Marla Mindelle, Constantine Rousouli and Tye Blue, the production developed a devoted following during its Off-Broadway run before transferring to Broadway in March 2026.

The Broadway engagement officially opened on 12 April and was initially expected to conclude in July. Its extension through September provided an additional two months for the unconventional musical, which grew from small, independently produced performances into an international theatrical success.

The final announced closure on the calendar belongs to HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL, which will end its Off-Broadway revival at New World Stages on Sunday, 8 November.

The current staging, developed from the production that originated at London’s The Other Palace, opened in New York in July 2025. What began as a limited engagement was extended four times, with November now confirmed as its final closing date.

Based on the cult film about popularity, social pressure and deadly teenage rebellion, the musical features a book, music and lyrics by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe. Its New York closure will not mark the end of the production, with a North American tour scheduled to launch at Baltimore’s Hippodrome Theatre from 15 to 22 May 2027 before visiting more than 35 cities across multiple touring seasons.

Although the five productions represent very different corners of the New York theatre industry, their departures collectively close several distinctive chapters. RAGTIME leaves with renewed critical prestige, MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL concludes a major commercial run, THE GAZILLION BUBBLE SHOW ends nearly two decades of family entertainment, and TITANÍQUE and HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL complete engagements shaped by strong audience demand and repeated extensions.

For audiences hoping to catch them before their final bows, the remaining opportunities will disappear quickly, beginning with RAGTIME on 16 August and continuing through the closing performance of HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL on 8 November.
