The Book of Mormon resumes Broadway performances following Eugene O’Neill Theatre fire

Broadway’s The Book of Mormon will resume performances at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on May 27, following a three week shutdown caused by a fire inside the venue earlier this month.

Performances of the Tony Award winning musical were suspended after a May 4 fire, which was isolated to the theatre’s spotlight booth. The incident temporarily halted the long running production while repairs, inspections and safety checks were carried out.

Producers of The Book of Mormon, alongside ATG Entertainment, which owns and operates the Eugene O’Neill Theatre, confirmed that the venue has now been returned to operation. In a statement issued May 26, the teams involved expressed appreciation for those who worked to reopen the theatre safely and said they were looking forward to welcoming audiences back.

The Broadway production currently stars Kevin Clay as Elder Price, Diego Enrico as Elder Cunningham and Sydney Quildon as Nabulungi. The cast also features Charlie Franklin as Elder McKinley and Jacques C. Smith as Mafala Hatimbi.

Winner of nine 2011 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, The Book of Mormon follows two mismatched Mormon missionaries sent from Salt Lake City to Uganda, where they quickly discover that spreading their message will be far more complicated than expected.

Created by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone, the musical has remained one of Broadway’s most recognisable comedies since opening in 2011. Its return to the Eugene O’Neill Theatre marks the end of an unexpected interruption for the production, which will now continue its Broadway run from May 27.
