OLIVER! Film Star Shani Wallis Recreates Iconic Song on Britain’s Got Talent

Musical theatre legend Shani Wallis has returned to the spotlight in memorable fashion, performing the iconic song As long as He Needs Me from OLIVER! during an appearance on the television talent show BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT. More than five decades after her celebrated performance in the Academy Award-winning film, Wallis proved that both her voice and stage presence remain firmly intact.

Now aged 92, Wallis appeared during auditions filmed at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens, delivering a heartfelt rendition of the song that made her famous. The performance saw the veteran performer revisit the role of Nancy, the character she portrayed in the 1968 film adaptation of Lionel Bart’s beloved musical OLIVER!. The emotional ballad is one of the most recognisable numbers from the show, sung by Nancy as she reflects on her conflicted loyalty to the abusive Bill Sikes.

For many musical theatre fans, the moment carried a particular resonance. Wallis’ portrayal of Nancy in the film version of OLIVER! helped cement the character as one of the most tragic and powerful roles in the musical theatre canon. The 1968 film, directed by Carol Reed and based on Bart’s stage musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, became a major international success and won six Academy Awards including Best Picture.

During the audition, Wallis performed the song in a lower key than the original version, a natural adjustment given the passage of time since the film’s release. Nevertheless, her performance demonstrated that her distinctive voice and interpretive connection to the material remain remarkably strong. The appearance served as both a nostalgic moment for long-time theatre fans and a powerful reminder of the enduring appeal of classic musical theatre repertoire.

Wallis’ performance was warmly received by the judging panel, who responded with enthusiasm and admiration for the veteran performer. The judges ultimately voted to send her through to the next stage of the competition, ensuring that audiences may see further performances from the musical theatre icon as the season progresses.

The appearance also highlighted the remarkable longevity of Wallis’ career in theatre, film and television. Born in London, she began performing at a young age and trained in dance before launching her stage career in the early 1950s. One of her earliest major theatrical roles was in the musical CALL ME MADAM at the London Coliseum, a production that helped establish her as a rising talent on the British stage.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s she appeared in a range of stage productions, including WISH YOU WERE HERE, WONDERFUL TOWN and IRMA LA DOUCE. These roles helped build a reputation that eventually led to her casting as Nancy in the film version of OLIVER!, a role that would become the defining moment of her career.

Following the success of OLIVER!, Wallis continued working extensively in film and television. Her screen credits include appearances in projects such as Arnold, Terror in the Wax Museum, Mayday at 40,000 Feet, and the animated feature THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE. She also remained closely connected to musical theatre, returning to the stage in productions including 42nd StREET, FOLLIES and ALWAYS.

Despite decades of work across multiple entertainment industries, Wallis has rarely been far removed from the music that made her famous. The song As Long as He Needs Me remains one of the signature numbers from OLIVER! and continues to be widely performed by singers and actors around the world. The ballad’s emotional intensity and dramatic context have made it a favourite among performers portraying Nancy, as well as a popular choice for concert and audition repertoire.

Her appearance on Britain’s Got Talent therefore represents something of a full-circle moment. Returning to the stage to sing the song that first brought her international recognition, Wallis demonstrated that the connection between performer and material can remain powerful even after decades.

The performance also serves as a reminder of the lasting influence of OLIVER! within the history of musical theatre. First premiering on the London stage in 1960, Lionel Bart’s musical quickly became a global success and has been revived repeatedly in the West End, on Broadway and around the world. The story of the orphan Oliver Twist and the colourful characters who surround him continues to captivate audiences across generations.

For fans watching Wallis reprise her most famous song, the moment offered a rare opportunity to see a performer revisit a role that helped shape musical theatre history. More than half a century after the film version of OLIVER! introduced her performance to international audiences, Wallis’ appearance on Britain’s Got Talent stands as a testament to both her enduring talent and the timeless power of a classic musical theatre song.
