Christian Bale Says a Return to Musicals Is “Pretty Close to Never”

More than three decades after first appearing on screen in the cult Disney musical Newsies, actor Christian Bale says a return to the musical genre is highly unlikely.

The Oscar-winning performer is currently promoting his upcoming film The Bride!, but during a recent interview the conversation unexpectedly turned back to his earliest starring role.

Revisiting Newsies

During the discussion, a reporter suggested that a moment in The Bride! briefly felt reminiscent of a musical sequence. Bale laughed at the comparison, noting that the connection between the two films had never crossed his mind.

“I would never have thought anybody would relate Newsies to The Bride! — that’s hysterical,” Bale said. “But wait, big difference. Newsies is a musical. This is not a musical.”

The comparison came from a scene in the film that features an intense burst of physical movement. Bale explained that the moment is far from a choreographed dance routine, describing it instead as a chaotic and emotional release of energy.

According to the actor, the scene is more about raw expression than musical theatre style performance, something that will make more sense once audiences see the entire film.

“Pretty close to never”

Despite his early start in a musical, Bale suggested he has little interest in returning to the genre.

While reflecting on the experience of filming Newsies in the early 1990s, the actor said that although he enjoyed the project at the time, he does not see himself performing in another musical.

He admitted he likely will not be “stepping foot in a musical again in my life,” though he added the familiar caveat that in Hollywood you should “never say never.” In Bale’s case, however, he joked that the chances are “pretty close to never.”

Released in April 1992, Newsies starred Bale alongside Robert Duvall and Bill Pullman. Although the film struggled at the box office initially, it later developed a passionate following and eventually inspired a successful stage adaptation.

A darker new role

These days Bale is returning to cinemas in a very different kind of story.

The Bride! is a horror-sci-fi film that also features Jessie Buckley, Peter Sarsgaard, Jake Gyllenhaal and Penélope Cruz. Bale takes on the role of Frankenstein’s monster in the film, with early reactions praising his intense performance.

While the film may contain moments of striking physicality, Bale was clear that audiences should not expect a sudden musical revival.

For fans who remember the young actor dancing through the streets in Newsies, the possibility of a musical comeback appears slim, though Bale’s final comment leaves just the faintest hint of possibility.
