Back to the Future The Musical Sets Closing Date Ahead of First UK Tour
Back to the Future The Musical is preparing to leave London after a five-year run, with its West End chapter set to end on 12 April 2026. The news comes as the production gears up for its first UK tour, which will launch in Bristol in October 2026.
Inspired by the iconic 1985 Universal Pictures and Amblin film, the stage version has been a standout hit since opening, blending new songs by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard with beloved classics such as The Power of Love and Johnny B Goode. Written by the film’s original screenwriter Bob Gale, the musical has attracted more than two million theatregoers in London and over four million people worldwide across its international engagements.
When the curtain falls in April, the West End staging will have played 1913 performances, marking the end of a significant London run. The announcement underscores the scale of the musical’s global success, with productions already mounted in North America, Australia, Japan and on Royal Caribbean Cruises, and a German production now in the works.
The creative team behind the show includes director John Rando, designer Tim Hatley, choreographer Chris Bailey, illusion designer Chris Fisher, lighting designers Tim Lutkin and Hugh Vanstone, sound designer Gareth Owen and video designer Finn Ross. Musical supervision is by Nick Finlow, with orchestrations by Ethan Popp and Bryan Crook, dance arrangements by David Chase and casting by Grindrod Burton Casting.
Celebrating the fortieth anniversary of the original film in 2025, the Back to the Future franchise maintains enduring cultural influence. With the trilogy having earned more than $936 million at the global box office, the leap from screen to stage continues to resonate with audiences across generations. As the DeLorean prepares to hit the road, the UK tour marks the beginning of a new chapter for a musical that has proved itself as more than a nostalgia trip.
