Nicole Scherzinger bids farewell to Broadway as Sunset Boulevard closes
Nicole Scherzinger has taken her final bow as Norma Desmond in the critically acclaimed revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard, bringing a two‑year journey that began in London’s West End to a close on Broadway last Sunday, 20 July.
The former Pussycat Dolls singer marked the curtain fall with an emotional social media post, telling fans the role “has changed me forever.” Scherzinger wrote, “After living and breathing Norma Desmond for the past two years, it is almost impossible to grasp that today is the last show. What began as a limited run, then extended, has somehow flown by.”
Scherzinger’s portrayal of the faded silent‑film star first wowed audiences in 2023 when director Jamie Lloyd’s stripped‑back production opened in London. The show transferred to the St. James Theatre in New York the following year, where it continued to draw sell‑out crowds and glowing reviews.
In her farewell message the actor highlighted the universal themes of the musical, saying Norma’s story “is for anyone who has ever felt alone, abandoned, or outcast, for the dreamers, the fighters, the believers.” She thanked Lloyd, Lloyd Webber, and her castmates “for everything,” adding, “Jamie, you have given us all new ways to dream. Thank you for showing me what is possible when you dare to be braver.”
The production has enjoyed a haul of accolades on both sides of the Atlantic. Last year Scherzinger won Best Actress in a Musical at the Laurence Olivier Awards, where the show also picked up honours for Best Director, Best Musical Revival, and multiple technical categories. The Broadway run repeated the success, earning Scherzinger the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Accepting the trophy at Radio City Music Hall, she told the audience, “Growing up, I always felt like I did not belong, but you have made me feel like I have come home at last. If anyone feels like they do not belong, do not give up. Keep giving, because the world needs your love and light more than ever.”
With the final performance now complete, attention turns to Scherzinger’s next move. While she has not announced a follow‑up project, the singer and actor’s transformative turn as Norma Desmond has cemented her reputation as a major force in musical theatre.
The closing of Sunset Boulevard ends a chapter for Broadway audiences, but the production’s impact, and Scherzinger’s star‑making performance, are likely to resonate long after the house lights dim.
